We can treat this like a game thread. I already find myself wanting to discuss this so here is a good place to do it.

Re: USA vs Spain (Ricky Rubio's intro to the world)
Ricky looks ok in the 1st quarter he played the last 4 mins or so.
Things I noticed are:
He is not bothered by ball pressure, even though his dribble is kind of high to me. If he lowered his dribble it might help his game.
Ricky is very aggressive with passes even if they are dumb, so I'm just going to consider that good and get used to ugly turnovers once in a while.
He is a little lackadaisical on his wing passes so far, hopefully he will adjust to the USA pressuring the wings.

I have a DVD of it buried away somewhere. My buddy was over watching it. He made a half court shot to send the game into the second OT too.

Under-16 national team
In August 2006, Rubio led the junior Spanish national team to the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. During the tournament Rubio achieved three triple-doubles and one quadruple-double. In the 110-106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points, the first player to do so in FIBA tournaments since Luol Deng (in 2001), grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists, and stole the ball seven times—a performance unprecedented in the tournament's history. He also forced the first overtime with a three-point, buzzer-beating shot from mid-court. Rubio was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

Who were some other players of note in that championship?

A lot of other players who are 18 right now, and will be prospects over the next 3-4 years. Tomislav Zubcic, Nikos Pappas, and Donatas Moteijanus are 3 guys who have been written about a bit by draft sites who played in that tournament.

Re: USA vs Spain (Ricky Rubio's intro to the world)
More about Ricky in this game.
I think he kinda drives with like he's going downhill (thats kind of a football analogy, but it works). His momentum doesn't stop on the drive until the opponent makes him stop. I like that.
Had a cool steal on LeBron while USA was trying to bring it up, he was pressuring Bron and Bron tried to get it to the PG, but Rubio jumped and grabbed it.

Here you can see the game tying 3 from mid court from Ricky after another 3 shoot from Russia in that under 16 years old championship.

He was 15 or 16 years old in that game, and that was really clutch, showing how mentally mature he was already.
As it was posted above, in that game he scored 51 points, 24 rebounds, 11 assists & 7 steals vs Russia.

I was watching the game where USA smashed Spain. I think the Gold medal game was more competitive. And Calderon got hurt so Rubio started and played more. That game is also available on this site.

You know, it hurts me to say this, but I'm watching the Gold Medal game for the first time and Rubio really hasn't impressed me like I thought he would.

Yeah, they didn't have much transition offense, and Rubio didn't drive much.
But hey, he was 17, playing against a tough team

Re: USA vs Spain (Ricky Rubio's intro to the world)
As much as I like Rubio, his play against the Olympic team being used as a plus was laughable. "He held his own" was quite a stretch.

I saw that game and I've never seen one single player dominate like that. And from PG position no less. He was head and shoulders above competiton there despite the russian team (my home team) being clearly the best team of that tourament. Some of the russian players were even older than it was legally alowed. Didn't matter.

Hi Guys,
Long time reader of this forum...... Im an Aussie and have been a wolves fan for a long time now. I don't think i have been this excited for the wolves future as i am starting to at the moment. Here is a quick vid i watched on You tube.... Rubio's highlights in the olympics.
I thought he was slow but sometimes he looks deceptively quick - when he puts his mind to it looks like he could be a pest on defence. No doubt this guy looks like something special - Heres hoping to see him develop in a Minny jersey!

Re: USA vs Spain (Ricky Rubio's intro to the world)
I think his playing level against USA at the Olympics has been taken out of proportions.
I think he played a nice game, but nothing spectacular. Everybody drools about it because he was 17 at the time. Anyway, I find a great mistake to read that much into a single game against a US Team. Many players have shined playing against the Americans, and it doesn't mean they can replicate those outings in the NBA. It's a different set, with a different environment and even different rules.
Rubio is a great prospect because what he has been showing on a weekly basis at the Euro leagues.
Dejan Musli was on that tournament as well.

Good overall post on Rubio in the Olympics. And I knew there had to be at least 1 Serb I missed in the group of elite prospects.
