Qualifying Offer/Free Agent Amounts... which minimum used?

Post#1 » by bgwizarfan » Mon Jun 29, 2009 4:07 pm

My question revolves around trying to find the Free Agent Amount for someone like Paul Millsap. He has 3 years of service now and his 08-09 salary was $797,581. Since he's a Restricted FA, he will count against his team's cap, in whichever of the following is greatest:

1) His Free Agent amount... here that will be $825,497, the 09-10 Min for a player with 2 years of service. I understand that for this calculation you use the REIMBURSED portion.

2) Any # he'd receive in an offer sheet.... NOT APPLICABLE! at least not yet

3) his QO... here's where my question is. the minimum salary + $175K is going to be greater than 125% of his last year's salary. WHICH MINIMUM IS USED here? the prorated portion, $825,497 (the min salary for a player with 2 years of service for 2009-2010) or the non-prorated one, $855,189 (the salary for a player with 3 years of service for 2009-2010). My gut says it's 3, but I was unsure. Whichever one it is will end up being his QO, since both numbers are greater than 125% of $797,581 and both #'s are also greater than the Free Agent Amount

I've been told that Milsap's QO is $1,030,189.

Another QO question: when extending QO's to players signed after January 10th, do the QO's have to be guaranteed?
