Core-Ending Situations

Post#1 » by moofs » Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:27 pm

Is anyone aware of any other teams that have built around 2 all-NBA players, only to have them both struck down by injuries or some other circumstance for 3-5 consecutive years in their primes?

I think the 93-96 Magic might count - Shaq, free agency; Hardaway, knee injuries - but other than them...?

Q:How are they experts when they're always wrong?
A:Ask a stock market analyst or your financial advisor

Penny wasn't injury-prone during those years. Penny's health started to deteriorate when Shaq left Orlando. But to answer your question, I don't think I can recall one duo that was as injury-prone as Yao and McGrady for many years.

Ah yeah, I was just thinking dissolution, not timespan. Any other ideas, anyone?

Rick Adelman is at fault here. He plays players too many minutes per game. He ruined Chris Weber's career, Tracy McGrady got smart & had surgery. The owners will do well to fire him.

You can't blame Adelman for playing his players. I blame China for making Yao play meaningless games every off season.

Mavericks went to the WC Finals in 1988 then the next season Roy Tarpley got kicked out for drugs, Mark Aguirre and Detlef S. got traded and Dallas won only 38 games and missed the playoffs in 1989. They won 47 games in 1990 but only 28 games in 1991, 22 games in 1992, and 11 games in 1993.
edit oops sorry missed the part about built around 2 nba players.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

Aside from some back pain here or there, that duo did not suffer the kinds of constant injuries that Yao and T-Mac have suffered. While Hill never played, Orlando T-Mac's health was outstanding by Houston T-Mac standards.

The Celtics, in the year following McHale/Reggie Lewis/Dennis Johnson. Two years post-Larry Bird. (I think it was 93/94).

I think they went from 48 wins to 30-ish.
