Ms trade: Mike Morse traded for outfielder Ryan Langerhans

Jack Zduriencik just announced that the Mariners have acquired outfielder Ryan Langerhans from the Nationals for Mike Morse. Langerhans, a left-handed hitter, plays all three outfield positions as well as first base. Though Langerhans characterized it as a minor-league trade, all indications are that Langerhans will be joining the Mariners Tuesday in New York.

"This gives us a degree of flexibility,'' Zduriencik said. "We thought it was important to add another guy like this.''

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Langerhans, 29, was hitting .278 (57x205) with 16 doubles, 9 home runs and 40 RBI in 64 games for Class AAA Syracuse.

Wow, I love our front office so so so so so much.

This is the exact kind of trade we always wanted our FO to make but they never did.

Langerhans was supposed to be a young stud a few years ago. Right around the time Jeff Francoeur, Kyle Davies and Kelly Johnson were also supposed to be young studs. What happened to him?

Oustanding defense but his light hitting held him back.

Someone needs to clue me in on what the problem with bringing up Michael Saunders is. Also create a spot for Dustin Ackley and get him on the field.

The FO doesn't believe Saunders is ready, they've done mostly everything else right so I'll trust them.

Ackley may come up at the END of next season however we shouldn't be thinking about creating space for him THIS year.

They'll have a spot for him low in the minors. Do you honestly think he's going to go to college straight to AAA and then the majors a few months after that?

How long did it take Longoria to get to the big leagues? and i'll argue Ackley was a better college hitter. Obviously if he isnt signed its a moot point but i think the level of play he has seen (cape cod league, Ncaa tournament), is equal to AA ball.

It took Longoria about a year and a half and he started in A ball. Ryan Braun took the same amount of time and he was a better hitter than Ackley and he started in Rookie Ball.

Just a sidenote here. How is Langerhans not able to crack that lineup in Washington?

One thing they don't lack is outfield talent. They've got Adam Dunn playing in the outfield regularly since Nick Johnson is at first base, as well as Josh Willingham, who's playing well. I guess Langerhans could have competed with Elijah Dukes and Austin Kearns for at-bats, or at least beaten out Corey Patterson and the now-traded Lastings Milledge for the last roster spot; but the latter two are perceived to have more upside. Langerhans was just crowded out -- even more so now, since they've upgraded from Milledge to someone who can sort of play in Nyjer Morgan.
