What do you like about Sheed?

Post#1 » by Cyclical » Tue Jun 30, 2009 2:53 am

Whether the rumor we got him is true or not. I don't think I quite get the excitement over Sheed's game.

Yes, I'd love to have him over a scrub like Mikki and he's one of the better bigs available now but in general I think he's overrated, lazy, unintelligent and a guy who never lived up to his supposed promise.

He's a 7 footer who never plays close to the basket -- much, much less than KG.
He is a bit of a chucker.
His technical fouls hurt his team.
And, most notably, his defense hasn't been good since about 2005-6.

If he picks up his defense and shows flashes of 2004 I'll be extatic. and, again, I DO think he's an improvement over what we have right now. Still, I'll take Powe as a PF any day of the week. Damn injuries... So what is it exactly that people LOVE about this guy? Maybe I'm missing something here.

I love the little gray spot on his head!
Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

If he would agree to bench minutes, he'd really be effective. The Pistons have been playing him far too many minutes the past 2 seasons- which has led to him breaking down

Solid defender. Although he shoots too many 3's, he seems to work well with Rondo and Marbury, as he spreads the court and those guys can drive.

Well, Sheed possesses a LOT of skill for one. He's a 7 footer who can step out and hit the three ball. He uses both hands effectively. He sets good screens. He's intelligent. He understands how to take away post players top move. He's long and can challenge shots inside without jumping. He's a better rebounder than Davis or any other third big the Celtics have had in the last two seasons.

In terms of fit on the Celtics roster. Sheed allows you to play with two floor spreaders in the front court. With Garnett and Sheed together you still have well above average defense but offensively you can pull both opposing bigs out of the paint. Think about how that would impact a matchup against Shaq or Dwight and to a lesser extent Gasol/Bynum (Odom, if he's resigned, helps to mitigate that impact). And with Sheed you can offer more consistent and timely rest for KG and Perk, while also ensuring better offensive balance (by having a legit offensive big option throughout the whole game) with the second unit. And possibly most importantly, Rondo can become nearly unguardable with KG and Sheed up front. With the shotblocking bigs playing out of the paint Rondo will be able to use his quickness to get all the way to the basket and finish. Sheed fits with Rondo much better on the offensive end than Perkins. That will help this team be successful.

I can't see how Sheed would really hurt this team beyond his spotty shot selection and his emotional outbursts. I think it would be naive to assume that Doc and KG will keep him under control but even given these drawbacks I think he adds a lot of things to this roster.

I think getting Sheed will pump up KG even more - if that's even possible. I have a feeling Sheed will be rejuvenated as well playing alongside his good buddy KG. Win/win situation if you ask me.

If we were paying him 10 mil year i wouldn't be excited, but at the MLE he's a steal.

He's a much better version of BBD. Baby doesn't really have an interior game either, and he isn't as good a defender. Sheed had 3 pt range, Baby has 18 foot range. Sheed can post up better than BBD, though he's not great in the post anymore. Basically everything that BBD can do, Sheed can do better (including getting techs;)

remember sheed is an emotional guy, when the team is tanking he doesn't try, but during the glory days of the DET squad he was very good. when he tries he's extremely talented. with KG and Doc and Pierce he should be well motivated to get another ring.

so given that we'd spend 3-4 mil/yr on BBD, i'd rather spend 5-6mil on Sheed. KG, Perk, Sheed each get 32 min/gm, that would be a very nice rotation.

I think people are getting excited about him coming here because he'd be the best back-up big man we've had since the Big Three came here. He has legitimate size to play center, unlike Big Baby and Powe, and he's a better defender than both of them, and still very solid in that department. He can hit the three so he's very useful in spreading out the floor -- if he played in the starting line up, Rondo would have a field day driving to the hoop. Basically, he's a former All-Star and champion and fills a huge need for us.

Long time sheed fan here. Let me lay it out for ya.

- He's 6'11" (probably 7')
- Hit's the 3
- Would probably make the NBA's all krunk team.
- Smokes weed.
- Plays heavy d.
- Plays inside and outside.

i'm spent.

How does Sheed shoot too many 3's? He shoots 35% from 3. It is actually his best asset. I mean he can board and defend which is great but the fact that you better drag you ass out to the 3 pt line to guard would be torture for opponents to defend. I mean if Sheed's in the corner and KG is in the high post do you just leave them open or leave the paint for Pierce and Rondo, oh yeah and that Ray Allen guy is wide the hell open now.

Sheed is a perfect fit for our needs, especially if Powe comes back healthy enough to be the 4th big and bump Scal to 5th. He's play Posey's role on offense and PJ's role on D.

He's not the player he once was, but he'd still start for 95% of the league.

he's over 6'10 , can play either front court position, can defend as well as anybody against dwight and shaq who we will have to deal with, has some low post moves, has range to the 3 point line to open the court up, has been a champion on a team he had to take great responsibility on.....

and uh, we could use all of the above

I like the fact that even at his age he can still shoot the trey respectably, and that him and KG on the frontline could create a lot of matchup problems for our opponents.

I like that he can still defend respectably well in the paint, unlike Mehmet Okur who is arguably better than Rasheed offensively but can be almost a liability on the defensive end.

I like his year by year consistency.

I like that he falls into a category of players perceived as persistent underachievers when in reality if anything he is a persistent overachiever that simply lacks motivation in situations where smaller-time players would be motivated.

I like that he does not turn the ball over much. We need that. Perk can now be considered an offensive option, but his offensive ability isn't good enough to justify his turnovers.

I like that his outside game could help us utilize KG more in the low post.

I don't like that he is 35 years old at the start of next season and has only played 80 games twice in a 13 season career. Doc may have to watch his minutes and might not.

I don't like that his shooting %s are typically fairly low.

I don't like that he doesn't contribute much (for a big man) on the offensive glass. We would have to count on KG to do more on the offensive glass when the two play together in the front court.

Can you imagine the crazy SMACK TALK that this team would be doing?....C'mon, we were bad enough with KG,Perk and Pierce...now add the biggest talker of all....it would be GREAT !!

Pretty much what everyone else said.

To add to it, he kind of makes Baby expendable. I would like to keep him as well, I just don't see it happening. He can play the majority of backup big man minutes and once Powe is back he will be a great fit alongside Sheed off the bench.
