Channing Frye

Post#1 » by rak1974 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:58 am

Channing Frye is now a unrestricted Free Agent. He would be cheap and better than Solo. I think he would be better than ZaZa on the Defensive end as well as scoring. ZaZa may be better at rebounding.

Sure he is soft- but the Hawks could use a big with range. Depending on the pricetag sure I'd bring him in

I want to bring in three bigs so the list I came up with is:

Mikki Moore, Johan Petro, Theo Ratliff, Zaza Pachulia, Drew Gooden, Antonio McDyess, Chris Wilcox, Stromile Swift, Channing Frye (R), Hakim Warrick (R), Leon Powe (R), Joe Smith, and Shelden Williams.
The ones in bold are the guys I want the Hawks to bring in. big men that want break the bank and are a hell of alot better than what we have.

Crawford/ Flip/ Teague
JJ/ Flip
Marvin W/ Evans
Smoove/ Frye or Gooden
Horford/ ZaZa/ Wilcox or Petro

Gardner
West
Luther Head

I don't see many holes in this line up........ I am not saying that they would win a championship or even get out of the East, but I think they would have a shout to have a better record and get the 3 seed and just build on that.
then hopefully by 2010-2011 season Teague would be ready to take over at PG , we could extend JJ, we get better at the SF ( weather that be Marivn staying healthy and stepping up his game ((which I doubt)) or Gardner stepping up or a F/A.), we get a starting Center. If we could do all of that we would be in good position to challenge for the NBA championship in 2011.

I feel!!

One player I am surprised that I haven't seen mentioned is Robert Swift. He is a RFA- has a history with sund and for how desperate people here are to get a "traditional center" I thought there would be some interest.

And Rak- just remember that the hawks will have to add talent using the MLE and BAE- and any money given to flip would have to come out of those bins as well.

I just don't see how bringing in so many people is possible. Flip, Gooden/Frye, Wilcox/Petro, and Head all for our mle? I would think that Gooden would want 4 a year possibly and Flip would want a pay raise from last season.

Well I am not talking about bringing everyone I listed in Only three bigs and one more guard. Out of those I listed I feel the only one that would be asking for any type of long term would maybe be Gooden and Flip. the others would take a one year deal similiar to the one that Flip inked at last summer. To add I think flip enjoyed playing in Atlanta that he would take another deal like last year.

Don't forget there won't be too many teams trying to spend any money this summer. Partly due to the economy and part because of the 2010 free agents. These years free agents won't have a whole lot of teams lineing up to spend any kind of money long term.

So I don't feel it is out of reach to believe the Hawks could get three of these guys for one year at two or three million. flip should get a little rise 2 million for one year. fry 3 million for one year. Petro 3 million for one year. I think ZaZa should get a slight raise maybe 3 years 13.5 million. Offer Wilcox or Gooden one year deal 4 million or the same thing you offered ZaZa. I would only bring in one of ZaZa, Wilcox, or Gooden. so pay should be something like this

JJ 14,976,754
Smoove 10,800,000
Crawford 9,360,000
Marvin 7,355,165
Horford 4,307,640
ZaZa 4,500,000
Frye 3,000,000
Petro 3,000,000
Teague what ever the rookie salary would be around 2,500,000 I believe not sure
Evens 2,500,000
Flip 2,000,000
Luther Head 2,000,000 one year
West 1,000,000
Gardner 1,000,000

That's about 66 million for the year...... is that too much?

Rak- The MLE is about 5.5 million. The BAE is about 2 million. In your scenario you have Flip taking hte BAE for 2 million so any other players have to combine for 5.5 million. You have Frye, Petro and Head combining for 8 million- thats where your problem comes in.

I really don't think Frye and Petro are the answers to our big man problem... the reason nobody wants is because they aren't very good. The best thing for the hawks is to resign Zaza (assuming we do not trade for a good center) and sign a good, back up power forward... out of all the names you listed, I like Leon Powe (hard to sign) and Chris Wilcox. I also like Brandon Bass (very hard to sign).

Mikki Moore... sucks, Petro...sucks, Ratliff...old, Drew Gooden...expensive, McDyess and Joe Smith...want to win a championship, Stromile Swift...ehhhh, Warrick...he is good but will be hard to sign, Sheldon Williams...well you know the whole sheldon thing at #5 and how it didn't work out...

Some other names:
Marcin Gortat (will require almost full MLE)
Ryan Hollins
Aaron Gray

BTW, players making the minimum do not require use of the MLE to sign. That's how I see Petro and Gray as minimum offers. That's also how I see Frye and Luther Head. If someone else wants to bid more so be it, I'm not convinced they are more than league minimum players.

Leon Powe probably won't be healthy enough to play at the start of the year. That would need to be factored in on him.

But what can you hope since Birdman is aready in love with DEN ;)

One player to add to this list is Villanueva, now that MIL has released him, even if I am not a fan of this player on the defensive end, and we already have Smith as PF wanted to shoot 3s.

Since when can Frye play C? He's not a choice to replace Zaza.

I would want to have both, and the question is not frye vs ZaZa. it is Frye vs. Solo.

I I do believe that Frye could play C and PF.

I love Anderson's game too, and I took a lot of grief when he came back into the league and I told people he still had it. I wanted to go after him agressively, but kb and dallas explained how he has a strong support structure in Denver for his drug use, and the last time he left Denver, it was a disaster. I mean, in the event that he has grown beyond that, I would make him an offer, and do my best to establish some similar structure for him here, but I wouldn't wait long for his response before pursuing other players, because I would expect him to reject it.
