Things like this slay me. First of all, I would hope he thinks pretty highly of himself. NBA players need confidence to be successful (see Rush, Brandon in the first half of last season).
Put yourself in his shoes: You are leaving your home country, your comfort zone, for an entirely new place. Not only that, but you are basically playing in the NBA for free. All of his money for a while will go towards paying his buyout. This kid could very easily have just stayed in Spain, but he has a dream: He wants to play in the NBA.
You really can't blame him or his handlers for wanting to ensure that he is in the best situation possible to succeed. Foreign players with high accolades routinely come over to the NBA and struggle mightily. That happens for a myriad of different reasons, but you can't blame him for wanting a good situation. He wants to put himself in a position to succeed. You can't fault him for that.
