OT: Yahoo Reports Yao Out For Season, Maybe Career

Terrible news for Rocket fans, their boards already discussing blowing up the team and rebuilding. But just as a fan of the game I hate to see someone as competitive as Yao go through this. He's one of the few guys who's quietly as competitive as the Kobe's and MJ's.
Thank you, Phil.

Wow....OMG that sucks! Every time this guy gets on a roll something happens to his legs. I hope Bynum doesn't follow that path after the last two years...

He's a true competitor and a great player. I hop something can be worked out medically to get him on the court again. If this end his career though, tough luck for the Rockets and a bad end to their plans since 2005.

Oh, man, that's terrible news. But I hope he will be OK. I hope he'll continue to play at the highest level.

Man, that sucks...

yeah, I saw this coming based on the type of repeated fractures and his size/weight. I'd say at the very least to come back he'd need to drop alot of weight, but even that may not help. Sad to see such a unique guy with those skills and his personality go through this.

Very sad to hear this news. I'm not a Rockets fan even though Houston is where I grew up, but having a get talented player like Yao in the NBA is a wonderful thing. I hope he recovers from his injuries no matter how long it takes. Yao has been on the court for a long time. It's good he is finally get some rest for a change. I hope he'll come back on the court.

Horrible news for any team to get such news about any of their players. Especially their cornerstone player, and what sucks the most in this case is that Yao is seemingly one of the nicest guys in the league. He is one of the few opponents we ever face that I can't get myself to dislike.

I hope he comes backs from this and wish him the best.

It sucks to hear such news. But if it is indeed career ending... would that take his salary off of the rockets' books..? Meaning they'll probably still have to pay him the remainder but could they sign another franchise player?

What sucks more then losing a player of Yaos caliber is that the center position is arguably the weakest it's been in decades. This definitely does not help on that front.

I just found out that if Yao is out for the season, the Rockets can ask for replacement at mid-level for 5.6 mil.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6503946.html

The Rockets could be in a position to seek a replacement for Yao. If he is ruled out for all of next season, the team could request a disabled player exception to the salary cap, allowing it to sign a player for the value of the mid-level exception, which is 108 percent of the average NBA player's salary (which last season was $5.6 million). But that would be an extreme commitment for the Rockets, since it would force them to pay large penalties under the NBA's luxury tax and to offer an expensive deal to a player who would theoretically be a backup when Yao returns. -- Houston Chronicle

Damn shame. Hope he heels.

Now, I believe that Yao injured himself and then kept on playing on that injured foot anyway for the rest of the game. I wonder if his foot would not be as bad right now if he had not kept on playing as soon as he injured it?

One could clearly see him laboring towards that now fated game for him, and not because he was tired either, so maybe it would have been best if he had shut it off instead of going into warrior mode. Sometimes it's best to listen to your body...but I can't blame him for sucking it up and trying to help his team pull out a win.
