Marquis
I'm surprised I haven't seen Marquis Daniels mentioned here more often. He had a solid season with a good game or two against us (if I remember correctly). He'd be a good youthful alternative to Grant Hill as the back up on the wings. Thoughts??

Re: Marquis
I'd rather have him here than Grant Hill. I don't see Hill being a good defensive option when he comes in for Ray/Paul. He gets beat way too often due to his age and losing his lateral quickness due to all the injuries.
Daniels is much more athletic and a better defender than Hill. BUT, both are great options for a backup SF behind Pierce. I'd be pleased with either.
Living in Dallas, I remember watching Marquis here in his first 2 seasons and he was very impressive then, haven't followed him as much since he went to Indy, but Dallas should never have traded him. He fit here well with Howard. I hate the Mavs btw.

How good a defender is Marquis Daniels? He looked good every time he played us last year offensively, but I can't remember any steller d. I've always thought of him as a Ricky Davis type player. I could be wrong. Anyone else remember him as a defensive presence?

Re: Marquis
I brought him up a couple of times in other threads, and i agree... if we can add sheed, keep marbury, we really have a bench full of shooters and Daniels lack of an outside shot wouldnt really be an issue
he would be a decent back up for both pierce and allen
Marbury
House
Daniels
Davis
Sheed
is a very, very solid bench unit..
sounding like Hill and Moon will be targetted before 'Quis though

I guess Daniels would be a good option for the minimum but I don't really understand what he does well? He is a pretty lousy shooter and doesn't rate well defensively. At least TA is a good defender and shoots a good percentage.

Re: Marquis
13/5 (roughly) on 45% shooting... its nothing amazing sure, but hes consistant... unlike TA
he can also take the scoring load on, on any particular night and go for 25+ which is always a bonus

Re: Marquis
It all depends on whether the Celtic front office handles this summer sophisticated
or stupid smart.
If they fail to execute a sign and trade, then they are forced to use the MLE, LLE, and vet minimum for signings. That means a big, an aging guy like Grant Hill if they're lucky, and someone who'll play for minimum. Marquis Daniels is out, in that case.
If they somehow step out of their school boy management mode,
and are able to execute a sign and trade (having contracts to trade helps,
the Lakers repeatedly turn crap into gold, as has Cleveland the past 2 years -
especially when Cleveland stole Wally and Delonte 7 months after their trade from Boston).
Again, if the Celtics can trade some combination of Scal, Tony, Pruitt, Giddens or Walker
for someone in lieu of using the MLE, then they'll still have the MLE and could really
upgrade their pathetic bench. The bench will be even weaker without Leon, since
Leon may not be able to contribute until the playoffs, despite the initial reports of a
February return, that may be a return to practice, versus productive bench play.

Ainge is going to be peddling TA, Scal, Giddens and maybe House to every team in order to do a sign and trade. I really don't expect TA back this season. Ainge is probably going to put the C's 1st round pick in 2011 in play in order to get a sign and trade.

Re: Marquis
But its 13 points on 13 shots. If you play TA 30 mpg and give him 13 shots he can manage 13/5 it just isn't going to happen on this team.
Certainly a guy worth a look but not a guy who is an upgrade to TA, I would rather the mins go to Walker.

Sounds good but I don't think it is going to happen. I think it is Sheed and Steph and hopefully nobody bites on Big Baby. I am not saying I am rooting for it but I think the C's plan on clearing that max salary spot for next season.

Re: Marquis
From what I'm reading, he's somewhat suspect on defense. Now, as a 2nd string guy, it isn't nearly as important than if he were starting, but is a 6-6 guy who doesn't seem interested in playing solid D and no outside shot much of an improvement over TA? His PER has been on the decline ever since he left Dallas and for all of TA's shortcomings, he actually had a slightly higher PER than Daniels last season.
I'd rather focus on guys like Hill, Moon, Barnes, or even a guy like Josh Childress if he were to come back from Greece.

I don't like Marquis, he doesn't seem like much of a upgrade over House or Tony. I'd rather sign a small forward who can play some minutes at power forward.

That is my choise too. The "Posey role". A guy who can play the 3 in teh second unit who can also filll the four sport with the starters, a la Shawn Marion.

Re: Marquis
Shawn Marion's ego will NOT allow him to take a backup role. That's why he was shipped out of PHX, and he was a key player for them, but he wanted to be "the man."
I don't understand why everyone is so high on Moon. Other than dunk, what can he do and what has he done? And I never meant that Daniels was a defensive presence, I just said he was better than Grant Hill, which in itself, isn't saying much.
And I'm sick of Tony Allen. He had maybe 2 good games the past 2 years. When he has the ball in his hands, I expect a turnover 100% of the time, and his defense, IMO, is overrated.
