Boozer Stays in Utah
Carlos Boozer has opted in on his contract to play for the Jazz for one more season, the Tribune has learned. Boozer stands to make $12.7 million under that deal and will become a free agent next season. A representative from Boozer's agent, Rob Pelinka, delivered notice to the Jazz a little before 3 p.m.

Boozer averaged 16.2 points a game last season and 10.4 rebounds with the Jazz last season. In the playoffs, those numbers bumped up to 20.6 points a game and 13.2 rebounds.

"We are excited that Carlos has decided to remain with the Jazz," said Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor. "We are hopeful he can continue to play at an All-Star level and will have an injury-free season."

Cavaliers' Varejao now a free agent
Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao did not exercise his option on a $6.2 million contract for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The hustling Varejao posted career-highs in starts (42), scoring (8.6), field-goal percentage (.536) and minutes (28.5) per game last season for the Cavs, who won 66 regular-season games but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals by Orlando. Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry has stated his intent to re-sign Varejao and the Cavs may offer him a contract during the free-agency signing period which starts on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-11 Varejao sat out a large chunk of last season in a contract dispute with Cleveland, but has said he wants to stay with the Cavs.

Pistons fire coach Michael Curry after 1 season
All or nothing seems to be the formula for coaching the Detroit Pistons. Bring home an NBA championship or hit the road. First-year coach Michael Curry became the latest Pistons coach to get the ax as president for basketball operations Joe Dumars fired him Tuesday after watching his team stumble to a sub-.500 record and an embarrassing first-round exit from the playoffs. But winning playoff games hasn't been enough to keep Pistons management happy. Just ask Flip Saunders.

Dumars fired Saunders last season after he led the team to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his three seasons. Curry was an assistant under Saunders for one season. In 2005, the Pistons parted ways with Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown after he helped them win a title and almost repeat during his two years with the team. And Rick Carlisle was fired after two years with the Pistons following a conference finals appearance in 2003 in his second season and NBA Coach of the Year honors in his first. Curry and Dumars shared playing days together with Detroit. That may have helped Curry land the coaching job last year, but it wasn't enough to keep him in it.

The Pistons went 39-43 in 2008-09 and were swept in the postseason in four lopsided losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers after six straight conference finals appearances. Dumars said after that series that Curry would return, but changed his mind by Tuesday. "This was a difficult decision to make," Dumars said in a statement. "I want to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the organization. However, at this time, I have decided to make a change." Pistons spokesman Kevin Grigg said the timetable for naming a new coach was up in the air."Obviously with the free agency period starting tomorrow (Wednesday), we don't know quite the speed of it," Grigg said.

Boozer, Okur stay with Jazz
Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur are both staying with the Utah Jazz next season.

About two hours after Boozer let the Jazz know he decided against opting out of the final year of his contract - which he once said he intended to do - Okur joined him Tuesday night.

The moves keep the Jazz lineup intact, but at a hefty price, as Boozer is scheduled to make $12.7 million next season and Okur $9 million.

Rumor: Ben Gordon to the Pistons, David Lee finished in New York
With the free agent negotiation period fast approaching(less than 2 hours until Tuesday at midnight), some destinations for the players who are going to become free agents are starting to be reported.

The Pistons are the most obvious place for Ben Gordon for the most obvious reason: They have the money to pay him. Staying within the division would give Gordon the satisfaction of sticking it to Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. But how do the Pistons make the pieces fit? By trading either Rodney Stuckey or Richard Hamilton. One source said the best bet is that Detroit agrees to a deal with Gordon first and moves either Hamilton or Stuckey later.

It makes sense to secure Gordon with a commitment before making a trade involving one of your other guards, though it's conventional wisdom that Joe Dumars won't part with Rodney Stuckey. But if the right deal comes along, there are no untouchable players on the Piston roster.

It's also rumored that David Lee will not be returning to New York next season. David Lee's days in New York are effectively over, said a source who believes that agent Mark Bartelstein will find the Knicks' choking point and exceed it by a dollar in negotiations with Oklahoma City and/or Memphis. "It's a tough loss for New York, but they don't want to screw up their 2010 plan," the person said. The money will be there for Lee, especially now that Boozer is off the market. The only reason for Lee to think twice is the added bang for the buck he's gotten out of playing in New York. He won't be a known commodity anymore in OKC or Memphis.

It's strange to see a player flee from the Big Apple(if this is true), especially for destinations like Memphis or Oklahoma. If Lee is set against returning to New York, will Joe Dumars make a pitch for him too? Dumars could offer the Knicks something in a sign and trade(something like Kwame Brown and Arron Afflalo) so New York could gain an asset while still maximizing their cap space in 2010.

This would also allow the Pistons to have enough cap space to sign Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, while also retaining the option to trade Rip Hamilton or Rodney Stuckey as mentioned above. Stay tuned...

Pistons' potential targets: Ben Gordon and more
Ben Gordon could add some scoring punch to the Pistons. The Detroit Pistons will have their pick of the litter during free agency, which begins at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. But Detroit will be working from a relatively short list of players team officials believe can make an immediate impact.

Here's a list of players Detroit has some level of interest in acquiring this offseason.

Ben Gordon, Chicago
• Pro: Big-time shooter, especially in the closing moments of tight games.
• Con: At 6-foot-3, he is undersized for a shooting guard.
Charlie Villanueva, Milwaukee
• Pro: Young, versatile, athletic front court scorer.
• Con: Needs to improve as a defender.
Paul Millsap, Utah*
• Pro: Tough, rugged rebounder who is a decent low-post scorer.
• Con: Coveted by every team with decent cap space this summer.
David Lee, New York*
• Pro: A double-double machine.
• Con: Restricted free agent status makes him tougher to acquire.
Brandon Bass, Dallas
• Pro: High-energy player; outworks most opponents in the paint.
• Con: At 6-7, he is undersized to play power forward.
Lamar Odom, L.A. Lakers
• Pro: Can play all five positions on the court.
• Con: Might consider re-signing with Lakers for less money.
Antonio McDyess, Detroit
• Pro: Solid rebounder, pick-and-pop shooter; good locker room presence.
• Con: Might consider playing for a team closer to winning title.
* -- restricted free agent

The Bucks are not make a qualifying offer to Villanueva, making him an unrestricted free agent. Villanueva is now on the Pistons radar.

UPDATE: Via MLive
“AUBURN HILLS - The never-ending carousel of coaches for the Detroit Pistons continues with the announcement that head coach Michael Curry has been fired.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” said Joe Dumars, Detroit’s president of basketball operations. “I want to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the organization. However, at this time, I have decided to make a change.”

UPDATE: Chris McCosky The Detroit News
“As for the next coach, Dumars could choose from a very short list: Doug Collins, former Bulls, Pistons and Wizards coach; Avery Johnson, former Mavericks coach; and John Kuester, former Pistons and current Cavaliers assistant coach.

“My family and I have an understanding and they know I want to do it (coach) one more time,” Collins said during a phone interview from his home in Arizona. “It has to be the right situation, but everybody knows I have a great affection for Detroit and the Pistons organization. They are committed to winning.”

Johnson, reached in Texas, had not heard from the Pistons and didn’t want to comment. “I have not heard from them yet,” Johnson said. “It’s unfortunate what happened to Michael, but of course I am always in listening mode.” “

UPDATE: Pistons.com Keith Langlois - Who’s Next?
“The names that have floated to the top of the list are Avery Johnson, Doug Collins and John Kuester – and all make sense, if for varying reasons. Johnson has the most recent track record of success in the NBA. His strength is implementing a structured system. There were whispers in Dallas that his style eventually became overbearing, but the type of discipline the Pistons seemed to lack last year was never an issue in Dallas under Johnson.

Collins is universally recognized as a brilliant basketball mind – his TNT telecasts are mini-clinics, in much the way Hubie Brown’s once were – who, like Johnson, also comes with a reputation for burning through relationships within a few seasons. Pistons fans will recall how Collins milked more wins than seemed possible out of his teams here in the ’90s. When he considered the Bulls job last summer, Collins reflected on those days and said he’d learned to pull back. Kuester was a highly respected piece of Larry Brown’s staff here previously and was seen as the counterbalance to Brown’s mercurial mood swings with the mettle to voice dissent. He doesn’t have the head coaching track record of Collins and Johnson – though he did run his own college basketball programs before leaping to the NBA – but he was credited by Cleveland coach Mike Brown for making the Cavs a much more efficient offensive team the past two years while Brown focused on defense, his specialty.

That Curry’s firing comes on the eve of free agency is nothing but coincidental. As Dumars said upon announcing the decision this afternoon, it was not one easily reached. It’s fair to assume it’s something he’s considered since the season ended, based on the dysfunction he perceived as the Pistons finished the season in a tailspin and put up little resistance during Cleveland’s four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs. Changes come with no guarantees, of course. Acknowledging a problem doesn’t ensure its resolution. But it’s a necessary first step that many in positions of power avoid for the reflection it casts on them. As the tough decision to fire Michael Curry one season into the job proves, the path of least resistance is one Joe Dumars steadfastly avoids.”
