How Long is the Waiting Period in Between Trades?

Post#1 » by vincecarter4pres » Mon Jun 29, 2009 5:53 am

Let's use the Vince Carter trade as example.

When can Alston be traded again?

I know the normal waiting period is 60 days after the trade is official, but I remember reading somewhere a few months ago that it is 30 days when a trade is made in the offseason.

If that is true, I assumed that was also only executable if there were at least 30 days left before the start of the following season and if there were less the 60 day period would come into effect?

He can be traded alone immediately. If he's traded in a multi-player deal where his salary has to be "aggregated" to satisfy the trade rules on the players coming back to the team that's trading him, it's two months. Period.

I think you may be getting confused with the waiver/re-sign period. From Larry Coon's FAQ:

If a team trades a player and the player is waived by the receiving team, the player's original team cannot re-sign that player for 30 days (during the season) or 20 days (during the offseason) following the date of the trade.

That's the one that varies between in-season and off-season. FGump is right about the two-month limit if you are looking to combine Alston with another player in trade.

^^^That is probably what I was confusing with trades.
