AInge Hopes to Use Mid-Level Exception
(Danny) Ainge confirmed the Celtics will attempt to use their mid-level exception. “It just has to be for the right player,’’ he said. The Celtics are concentrating on power forwards and backup centers.

Possible free agents on their list include: forwards Grant Hill (Phoenix), Antonio McDyess and Rasheed Wallace (Detroit), Jamario Moon (Miami), Lamar Odom (Lakers), Zaza Pachulia (Atlanta), Anthony Parker (Toronto); center Chris Wilcox (New York); and guard Marquis Daniels (Indiana).

The Celtics pursued McDyess last February before signing Moore. Odom (who earned $11 million last season) and Wallace ($13.68 million) likely would have to take major pay reductions to join the Celtics. Pachulia or Wilcox could serve as reserves behind center Kendrick Perkins.

Is Glen Davis Worth Nearly $6 Million?
The Celtics took the first step in their attempt to retain the services of Glen Davis by tendering the forward a qualifying offer last night.

But the chase is far from over. Based on his playoff performance - beyond Kendrick Perkins he was arguably the Celtics’ best player during the conference semifinals against Orlando - Big Baby is anticipating a big paycheck.

According to a league source, Davis, as a restricted free agent, will carry a mid-level exception (approximately $5.8 million) price tag into the marketplace. He also qualifies as a so-called “Early Bird” exception free agent (two years with the same team), meaning the Celtics can sign him for up to 175 percent of last season’s salary.

Source: Iverson Will Have to Take Pay Cut
(Allen) Iverson, who played in 57 games for the Pistons and averaged 17.4 points and 4.9 assists, had missed 16 games with a groin injury beginning on Feb. 27. If he finds a team that will accommodate him, Iverson can expect a hefty pay cut.

"It's going to be interesting," said one lawyer who deals in player contracts. "The only place I can see him landing with any kind of money is Charlotte because of Larry Brown. Obviously, he won't get what he's used to."

For better or worse, Joe Dumars moves boldly
Things change. Sometimes this is true in a slow way and sometimes true in a fast way, and right now in Pistons Land it's true in an avalanche way, and Michael Curry just got buried underneath it. "The fact is, we're going through this transition right now," Joe Dumars told me Tuesday afternoon, shortly after letting his coach go, "and I think it's imperative we have someone who has more experience to help guide us through."

Curry was not that guy. He was not that guy when hired last year. But last year pieces weren't moving on the Pistons' board faster than the props on a "Saturday Night Live" set. By the time you read this, the franchise may have lassoed a high-priced free agent like Ben Gordon or Charlie Villanueva (or maybe both). It already has unofficially parted company with Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson and maybe Antonio McDyess. It drafted three forwards last week, all of whom are expected to make the team.

In Dumars' eyes, that much change at the player level requires more experience at the coaching level. Curry didn't have it. And that was not just Dumars' view. There was grumbling around the Pistons' locker room that Curry was not ready for Prime Time, and although the front office might have believed the 40-year-old former player eventually could get there, the luxury of time is gone. Things change.

Suddenly Curry's job requirements were different
"Absolutely," Dumars said, when I asked if he had to take responsibility for miscalculating the Curry hire. "I think I probably put too much on him as a first-year head coach. I don't expect anything less than for me to have to take responsibility for that."

But as is well known by now, the one thing Dumars takes as fast as he does responsibility is action. If so, he has to understand that culture has changed fast. Remember, when Curry was hired last June it was to squeeze more production out of a solid, familiar unit: Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, Rasheed. Curry didn't have to mold or teach them, just inspire them.

But a few games into the season, everything changed. Billups was traded for Iverson. Suddenly, managing egos and a new superstar were atop Curry's list. Not his strengths. And with the roster upended, young faces and new faces coming in, the job requirements don't look much like the ones Curry was hired for.

Two words for whoever's next: Experience preferred
I have less of a problem with the Pistons' firing Curry than I did with them hiring him. It always seemed a risk. But in the NBA, the new coach is usually a reaction to the old one. Curry, involved and passionate, followed Flip Saunders, who seemed too flat and distant. Saunders followed Larry Brown, who seemed too volatile and emotional. Brown followed Rick Carlisle, who seemed too removed. Now Curry, too inexperienced, will be followed by someone with more credits on his resume. Names like Avery Johnson and Doug Collins are being tossed about. But Dumars has no reason to speed into a new hire, not until he sees what his roster is.

Which is where his efforts will be focused right now. Make no mistake, this is Dumars' team no matter who coaches or dunks for it. That is even more true now with Bill Davidson gone. I give Joe credit for taking responsibility for Curry's hiring and firing -- "I misjudged what he would be able to do as a first-year head coach" -- and for ignoring sentimentality or traditional time frames in favor of putting the right pieces together.

But no matter whom he signs -- player or coach -- Dumars is under the lamp now, and the team's success or failure rests mostly in his decisions. Things change. Then again, the Pistons had a losing record and were ousted in the first round.Aren't they supposed to change?

Detroit and Memphis - two teams with cap space - both are expected to court Davis over the next month. The Pistons, depending on who they bring back, are a playoff team. Memphis, attracted to Davis’ promise as a young power forward, isn’t even close.

OKC, Memphis Interested in David Lee?
David Lee's days in New York are effectively over, said a source who believes that agent Mark Bartelstein will find the Knicks' choking point and exceed it by a dollar in negotiations with Oklahoma City and/or Memphis. "It's a tough loss for New York, but they don't want to screw up their 2010 plan," the person said. The money will be there for Lee, especially now that Boozer is off the market. The only reason for Lee to think twice is the added bang for the buck he's gotten out of playing in New York. He won't be a known commodity anymore in OKC or Memphis.

Briefly: While some names make no sense for the Mavericks in free agency, one to keep in mind is Allen Iverson – but only if Jason Kidd ends up elsewhere. Most people expect Iverson to get some mid-level exception offers.

Iverson among NBA free agents
For the first time in his professional career, former 76ers wunderkind Allen Iverson faces an uncertain future as NBA free agency goes into full swing today.

Anderson Varejao Hits Open Market
Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao did not exercise his option on a $6.2 million contract for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The hustling Varejao posted career-highs in starts (42), scoring (8.6), field-goal percentage (.536) and minutes (28.5) per game last season for the Cavs, who won 66 regular-season games but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals by Orlando.

Knicks to Offer Lee 4 Years, $32 Million
A team source claims the Knicks will offer Lee a four-year deal worth $32 million, which is below his asking price of $10 million per season. The Knicks have the right to match any offer given to Lee, as well as Robinson, but the club wants to remain fiscally responsible as it pertains to the summer of 2010. "There's no question he'd love to stay in New York," Lee's agent, Mark Bartelstein said yesterday. "But you are only a free agent so many times in our career, especially in the prime of your career."

Portland is expected to make a strong push for Lee, who averaged career bests in scoring (16 points) and rebounds (11.7). Detroit and Oklahoma City also have the cap room to make Lee a substantial offer.

It is no coincidence that the Knicks drafted a power forward (Jordan Hill) and a guard (Toney Douglas) as insurance in case they lose Lee and Robinson. Of the two, the Knicks seem more committed to keeping Lee. Robinson could stick around if he were to accept the Knicks' $2.9 million qualifying offer. The Knicks also have the option of working out a sign-and-trade with either Lee or Robinson.

Avery Johnson a Detroit Coach Candidate?
The Detroit Pistons are looking at a year or two of mediocrity after blowing up their team, but that might be enough to get Avery Johnson's attention.

The Pistons fired Michael Curry today and Johnson's name is sure to surface. A good writer friend in Detroit already has said Johnson's name has come up in internal discussions. Rest assured, Johnson loves the winning percentage he built with the Mavericks and he doesn't want to see that take a major hit. He's very unlikely to take a job with a team that projects as a 50-loss team.

As long as Johnson learns a little bit about flexibility, which was one of his problem areas with the Mavericks, he can be a rousing success with the Pistons.

Suns Options Include Frye, McDyess
With free-agency contact starting Tuesday night with some calls, the Suns plan to reach out to five or six free agents. They are targeting veteran big men, including one they had before (Antonio McDyess) and some who they talked about trading for last season (Joe Smith and Rasheed Wallace). Four-year pro Channing Frye, who grew up in Chandler, is a possible target who the Suns always have liked.

OKC to Sign Big Name with Their $11 Mil?
The NBA’s free agency period gets under way today, and some of the biggest names on the market have been linked to the Thunder. Oklahoma City should be at least $11 million below the salary cap when the 2009-10 figure is announced next week.

With so much room, the Thunder could target some of the most talented players on the market.

Oklahoma City is widely considered a likely destination for players such as Utah’s Paul Millsap, Chicago’s Ben Gordon and New York’s David Lee.

.500 might appeal to Avery
The Detroit Pistons are looking at a year or two of mediocrity after blowing up their team, but that might be enough to get Avery Johnson's attention. The Pistons fired Michael Curry today and Johnson's name is sure to surface. A good writer friend in Detroit already has said Johnson's name has come up in internal discussions.

There's only one person who should care about that in Dallas: Mark Cuban. It would save Cuban a few million bucks if he took the Detroit job. Whatever Johnson's salary would be in Detroit, it would be subtracted from the roughly $4 million that Cuban owes Johnson for next season. Rest assured, Johnson loves the winning percentage he built with the Mavericks and he doesn't want to see that take a major hit. He's very unlikely to take a job with a team that projects as a 50-loss team.

The Pistons aren't going to be that bad. At least not for an extended period. As long as Johnson learns a little bit about flexibility, which was one of his problem areas with the Mavericks, he can be a rousing success with the Pistons.
