Suns interested in Odom

Post#1 » by ShawnBronald » Wed Jul 1, 2009 1:55 pm

"The Lakers contacted Lamar Odom on Tuesday night about remaining with the champions, and a number of other clubs are interested in the forward.

The Spurs and Suns are interested in Odom, and have been looking to clear room in order to sign him.

Odom is believed to be seeking a four-year deal worth about $10 million annually.

There are just a handful of clubs - Detroit, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Atlanta, Toronto, Portland and maybe Sacramento - that have enough cap room to sign Odom.

"There are not a lot of teams," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "There's a couple, but it only takes one team to make an offer."

Via Los Angeles Times"

Not sure what to make of this, has anyone else heard anything about this? I'd imagine this would only be done if the Amare trade goes through and, perhaps, we buy out Wallace's contract.

I really like Odom's game, but I would be shocked if the Suns got him. If they went after an older, top-tier free agent like that, that would mean they're still trying to compete, which would mean they'd be keeping Stoudemire, which would probably mean there wouldn't be enough cap space to sign Odom, ultimately.

I see where Justin is coming from. At this point, it would either be Odom OR Stoudemire, and for that, I'd rather have Stat. Though, if phoenix does the trade with golden state, and then buys out Ben Wallace, we may have a shot at Odom and that would still make for a pretty decent team.

Makes you wonder about the GSW trade because that's the scenario in which Odom is most useful.

Austin: On a couple of other sites I had proposed going through with the GS trade then jettisoning JRich for cap space and signing Odom or Hedo.

Nash, Barbosa, Wright, Odom, Biedrins with a bench of rookies & second year guys: Belli, Dragic, Lopez, Amundson, Dudley, & new guy Clark.

Odom would definitely be a nice fit on our team. Not sure I'd want to give him a 4-year deal, but 2 or 3 would be nice. $10mil per is about a fair price for him. And as has been said, I'm not sure how signing a big-money veteran would fit in with the whole rebuilding thing. But then again, I never wanted to rebuild in the first place, and still don't.

i don't understand this move....if we're rebuilding with "youth" and "financial flexibility", where does Odom come into the picture? Kerr needs to pick a path and stick to it.

I like Odom in all, but his inconsistency scares me. We had that in Diaw and still do in Barbs. Do we really need another guy like that? I do like his game and think he is talented and is a match up problem for most team. He would fit with us, but I really do not see the suns landing him.

Imagine a situation in which we don't have Amare. Now tell me who is more valuable. Odom or Ariza?

Exactly.

I think the amare contract extension rumor was put out there by the Suns perhaps to smokescreent he trade and drive value up.

I like Ariza, but am not high on him. There is a reason why he has been on 3 teams and has never avg over 8 pts and 4 rebs as a starting SF. Athletic yeah, but I many get caught in the high lights and wha the did in the playoffs. He was big in some games, and was no where to be found in others.

No to odom or Ariza. They look good playing with Gasol/Kobe. Odom is too inconstitent and Arizona can't really shot, more of a hustle type player.

Ariza is a nice role player, but that's it. Odom isn't a guy you can build around, but he can be one of the focal points of a championship-caliber team. I don't think you can really pay for role players, especially if you don't think you've got a championship-caliber core (which Kerr says we don't).

And I could be wrong, but I really think Ariza's hot shooting in the playoffs was a fluke, and he'll return to being a bad outside shooter going forward. Dude made 31% from 3 in the regular season. I trust that sample size more than I do the playoffs.

By the way, what are the chances that the Suns actually get Odom? I'ma say 5%.

I dunno ... I thought I remembered that, back in the Marion trade rumor days, when we were considering trading him to the Lakers for Odom, that Odom said he'd enjoying playing in Phoenix. I think Phoenix would be a pleasant second-choice for him, but I do really doubt he leaves the Lakers.

I call BS, WHY do we target him for all the reasons others have said?

He isn't defensive
He plays the position Amare does
He isn't young
He isn't going to be had for a small contract like Kerr's been talking about

I don't really understand Phoenix's interest, at least as the team stands now. What I really don't understand would be why Odom would sign here. I'm not sure we can offer more than the Lakers (as far as money goes). But more so, the Lakers are the current champs and Odom was a part of that. Why would you leave that to go to a possible rebuilding effort? And even if we're not "rebuilding," per se, I can't see how we'd be in better position for a title than the Lakers this year or even several years down the road. All things considered, this would be stunning if it were to go down.

He doesn't fit any of our needs. Yeah he can replace Diaw's versatility, but the dough he's asking teams to drop is something that we can't afford.

Cash is right though, there's no point of shelling out serious dollars for a team that's barely playoff bound.
