2009 Free Agency Thread

I didn't see one yet, so here it is.

I know we're not going to be huge players here in straight free agent signings, but who do people want to go after?

I think I've been pretty vocal about my desire to either sign or pull a sign & trade for Marvin Williams. He's only 23 and has a bunch more upside, but has several solid years in the league already. He's the long 3 we need, and he can shoot the 3 ball. He also plays defense. I don't think we'd be able to offer him enough to avoid the Hawks matching, so what's fair in a sign & trade?

I'd be willing to go as high as expirings, Pekovic's rights, and either the Charlotte or Utah 1sts for him if we can sign him for less than 8 million/year. His fit for age, talent, and skills are perfect in my opinion.

I like him too... I don't think we'll be able to swing something though. I'd be nice to see what he could do with our young PGs at the helm. (He's never really played with a pure point in the NBA)

We already have 14 players on our roster (Jefferson, Thomas, Cardinal, Songalia, Gomes, Love, Brewer, Madsen, Smith, Telfair, Pecherov, Brown, Flynn, Ellington); 15 with Rubio

I think this offseason, we will make a veteran SG or SF signing for the minimum, my guess would be one of Quinton Ross, Juan Dixon, Morris Almond, or Ime Udoka.

Pekovic, and Char 1st have very good value. Moving either of those with a minor deal for cap purposes would be good. It is just a matter if Atl wants to resign him or not.

According to an ESPN poll, Megan Fox is by far the best available free agent. I think we should go after her.

She would only play for a big market team like New York or LA

I don't dislike Williams, but there are some interesting comments about his fit on ESPN at the moment. Specifically, the Wolves are mentioned as a bad fit because, despite the fact that he can shoot the three, it's not the main focus of his game. He likes to post up and work in the paint more, which doesn't fit with the Jefferson/Love concept.

More likely, I'd guess this year we sign someone short term and low $$, so Kahn and the new coaching staff can get a feel for how their pieces are working together, and next year is the FA and/or trade splash (possibly at the deadline).

If Carney would come back for minimal expense, that's the way I'd go. A lot depends on Brewer's ability to come back from his injury. With him and one FA, we've got our slots filled. Without him, we're in trouble.

If Rubio doesn't play for us this year (whether its because of a trade, or because he's in Europe)
1 - Flynn/Telfair/Brown
2 - Brewer/Carney/Ellington
3 - Gomes/Brewer/Cardinal
4 - Love/Smith/Songaila/Pecherov
5 - Jefferson/Thomas/Madsen

Pecherov possibly a buyout or D League candidate once Jefferson is back? I think that's a reasonable roster for now, realizing that pretty much everyone who isn't in the starting 5 is potential trade fodder at the deadline (some more desirable than others, obviously). It means your outside shooters are, essentially Carney, Gomes and two rookies, but still...

I'm pretty sure he likes to put the ball on the floor and drive to the hoop, which is also something we need. The other thing they mention is that he's great in transition, which would also be great for us, because although Jefferson is slow, Love has the outlet, and Flynn, Rubio, Brewer, and maybe Carney, as well as Williams could do some damage on the break. The guy is used to being the 3rd/4th option on a team, I think he'd get plenty of opportunities with us that play to his strengths.
