Is signing Kessel really worth it?
If it will cost us a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick next year? Personally I think it would be a horrible move considering we probably wont be a playoff team next year. This compensation crap is ridiculous, i can understand maybe one pick but 3??? I don't even rate Kessel that high, what has he really proved anyway besides the fact he can't stay healthy...

He's 21 years old and just came off a season where he scored 36 goals in only 70 games. Pace that out over 82 games and he basically just put up a 40 goal season. How many players are there in the league that are his age or younger that scored goals at that kind of rate? Not every good young player coming up is Crosby, Malkin or Ovechkin. Kessel is only 21 years old and shown that he's one of the better pure finishers in the league.
These are his game totals so far in his 3 year career
70
82
70
That doesnt exactly sound like a player that cant "stay healthy" to me. We'd be lucky if we could aquire a player like Kessel whos not even close to hitting his prime.

He was playing through injury and his play last year suffered at times because of it. I don't see the logic in giving up a high 1st round pick and high 2nd and 3rd round picks to pay a guy 6 mil+/season when we could get a top 10 talent and only have to pay him a small fraction of that.

Sorry, how do we do that?

We were going to TRADE for him. You dont have to give up compensation in this scenario. The only time you have to give up compensation regarding RFA's is when you send a offer sheet there way and the team they currently play for decides to not match the offer sheet. I dont see anywhere that the Leafs were thinking about sending him a offer sheet. I also dont quite understand the logic about him getting paid 6 million a year considering that most reports out of Boston are saying hes looking for about 5 million.
What top 10 talent are you going to get that you would only have to pay around 2.5 to 3 million a season?

If you read what I said you would have seen that i'm referring to a top 10 player in next years draft which is why i wouldn't want to sign him for the cost of 3 picks, obviously trading for him didn't work so that's probably the only other way. Sure he may have said around 5 mil but obviously teams will covet him and outbid any potential offers he may get, which is why i said roughly 6 mil.

Why did you even bring up this topic? The leafs havent even been rumoured to be sending a offer sheet his way, just that they tried to trade for him which means they wouldnt have had to give up compensation. There is no way any team is going to pay him 6 million dollars a year with the cap to be soon coming down. I really dont understand why you'd be proclaiming he wants 6 million a year when almost all reports out of the team he plays for is saying he wants in the 5 million range.
I'd eat my short if some team offered him a 6 million a year offer sheet and also had to give up the necessary compensation in the process. You also said 6plus million.

Re: Is signing Kessel really worth it?
No way Burke is going to give Kessel an offer sheet, as Griff83 mentioned, it was a rumoured trade scenario, where we would be able to re-sign him free of compensation. The Leafs haven't been rumoured with signing Kessel, Burke isn't going to give up a shot at Taylor Hall to get Kessel.

Is it a normal trend here for people to have selective reading skills?

Stop complaining, just say what you wanted to say and move on. No one wants to hear your snarky remarks.

I think you mean nobody wants to read, not hear. Get out of my thread then if you don't want to READ my "snarky"(whatever the hell that means) remarks. I'm afraid if I post anything else hockey related somebody will throw in a bunch of things I never wrote and argue with phantom statements...

Read your own post (the one that lead to the questions) again. It's poorly written, and that's why folks didn't understand it. No offense, I was honestly curious about what you had to say. Try not to take things so personally dude. We're all here to talk hockey.
Looks like the Leafs and Bruins have not re-opened discussions around a Kaberle/Kessel deal, so it's all pretty much a mute point now.
