Pacers' priorities start from within

Pacers' priorities start from within BY Mike Wells

The NBA's free agency period starts today, but the Indiana Pacers' shopping list is short.

They have about $8 million to spend, and their priorities are to re-sign restricted free agent Jarrett Jack and stay below the luxury tax, expected to kick in at about $68 million next season.

Team president Larry Bird said the Pacers are in the second year of a three-year rebuilding plan and have no intention of deviating.

Nothing earth shaking. But a decent read.

It's as I figured. I wouldn't expect any ground breaking deals perhaps until around this time next year. If we can manage a one sided deal in our favor, then there will be changes.

Agreed, we aren't going to be making any trades just for the sake of doing it. And definitely not, if it means taking on long contracts. You'll notice that after his three year rebuilding period is up the only player we have signed beyond that is Danny. It's not that we won't resign anyone, but we'll have the flexibility.

I mean as fans we all thought Rush, Hibbert, Granger, and now Hansbrough were the core, but Larry said he wont stray from that.

I did also like that he mentioned a few quick options at SG including Dahanty Jones, over 64% from 3 pt range last year and former Indiana stand out Corey Brewer, both whom are free agents and could signed for anywhere between the minimum and the MLE.

and a 2mm trade exemption that could bring a young player from a team trying to avoid the luxury tax.

Ooh. You know who would be good with our trade exception? Rudy Fernandez. He's mad the Blazers are bringing in Turkoglu. I'm sure we could throw in a 2nd round pick.
