If You Need A Center Big Sofo Is Heading To NBA

Post#1 » by KWSN-Men » Wed Jul 1, 2009 2:01 pm

In Greece the report is he has lost 105 pounds and he now weighs less than he did when he helped Greece beat Team USA. He is in the best shape he's been for about the last 4 years or so. He is coming to play in the NBA summer league and is trying to get an NBA contract.

His agent says he is checking in at 6-10 349 pounds.

There you go Rockets fans.

Still too heavy. Probably won't get much burn.

Doesn't an NBA team already own his rights? If I remember correctly, he was drafted in the second round years ago....

The Clippers own his rights. He is playing with their summer league team. He is trying to get an NBA contract. Either with them or any team. If the Clippers don't sign him they will ask for him to be traded to a team that wants him. According to the Greek national team doctors and trainers he only has 9 more pounds to lose to be at his ideal playing weight of 340 pounds. He weighed 354 in that game in 2006 where Greece beat the US.

Yo do us all a favor and STOP posting on our boards...no one wants your greece junky players here. All your previous posts have been nothing but wasteful and you seem to only advocate how greece is better than USA. So do us all a favor and post on another board man.

How about you stop posting on our boards? The guy is trying to give us helpful information. If you are not interested in the thread then move on.

I appreciate people from other places filling us in on basketball around the world. This is an international game now. A GM would be dumb not to look in other places.

That being said I would like to see how he does in the Summer League. He has the potential but he'd have to cut back another 40-50lbs, IMO. At this point, I'd sit down and try to work something out at the very least. Who knows, maybe DM can get this guy for a steal.

I do not agree. I haven't found this user's posts to be insulting. While I do tend to think that many Euro's overrate their local players and overestimate how they'd fit into the NBA, I actually enjoy hearing a different perspective and learning more. That's one compelling reason to visit this forum in my opinion.

So, my take is this user's posts are welcomed. If you don't like them, you don't have to read them - that's my approach.

Edit - Nachbar_is_God beat me to it.

Thank you for the info, KWSN! I still have to think that his weight may be a hinderance against him playing the 82+ game schedule, but it's always nice to have some updates.

I don't see the Clippers keeping him since they have Zach, Camby, Kaman and now Blake Griffin.

No no, that's Lakers4Life. This guy is greek/euro-centric, but he provides some great info and insights. I'm all for knowing all I can, and he's better than our newspapers, for certain.

KWSN-Men, you say his ideal playing weight would be 340, who would you compare his game to if he were to play in NBA? I've heard the "baby Shaq" stuff, how accurate would you say that is?

If history is any indication, players who get the "Baby _______________" nicknames are usually terrible.

Ex: Harold Miner = Baby Jordan

Ummm.... my searches for other "Baby _____________" players came up empty, but Harold Miner is good enough (bad enough?) to want to avoid the nickname like the plague.

Anyway, I found some other gems that you may like:

Amusing NBA Player Nicknames:

Joel "The Vanilla Gorilla" Przybilla
Tony "Buckets" Delk
Vernon "Bimbo" Coles
Corliss "Big Nasty" Williamson
Ruben "Kobe Stopper" Patterson
Daron "Mookie" Blaylock"
Pervis "Never Nervous" Ellison
Jerome "Pooh" Richardson
Marcin "The Polish Hammer" Gortat
Dennis "3D" Scott
Zach "Z-Bo" Randolph
Corey "Bad Porn" Maggette - - WTF????

Anyway, here are where I found these:

Big Sofo moves really fast for someone 350+ pounds. His frame looks like he was born to carry all that weight, but I wonder how much more fast and athletic he could be if he lost another 50-90 pounds.

That is exactly what I thought. I watched some of his other stuff. He moves surprisingly fast for someone who is 350+lbs. He's way better than Glen Davis, IMO.

How good is he at pushing twelve year-olds out of the way after hitting game winners? :D

The only player in history he could be compared to is Shaq. Basically that's how he plays. His strength is that he can score in the low post even against a triple team of 7 footers. His weakness is his stamina which limits him to about 15 minutes a game. But he's getting better. Before he could only play about 2-3 minutes, then about 5-8 minutes, then about 8-10 minutes. So he is gradually getting more and more back in game shape.

He's exactly like Shaq in how he plays except he's about 6-10 and Shaq is more like 7-2 (even though he's listed at 7-1). Baby Shaq is a very accurate way to describe it (ONLY if he's in shape). He even shoots free throws like Shaq does.

The Greek trainers said his ideal playing weight would be 340 where his body fat would then be at 12%. He's mostly muscle. The latest pic of him.

Image

By contrast, here is what he looked like last year.

Image

Basically, the Greek trainers are saying that if he is at 340 he's at his ideal playing weight and is mostly muscle.

His nicknames in Greece are Big Sofo, Hercules, and The Incredible Hulk. Baby Shaq is the nickname Americans gave him. It's not a nickname he got from Greece.
