How Can the Lakers Keep Odom?

Quick question for you guys. I'm not really familiar with all the caproom rules, but from what I understand the Lakers are already over the that. So how can they sign Odom for more than MLE?

The Lakers have "Bird rights" on Odom. Whenever a team has Bird rights on one of their free agents, they can re-sign him to any amount up to the maximum, even if that puts them over (or further over) the cap.

"Bird rights" is not a quick concept to explain. For details, check this excellent resource:
