Nash Speaks

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Fri Jul 3, 2009 6:09 am

Nash said his agent, Bill Duffy, is scheduled to meet with Suns general manager Steve Kerr next week. Nash also suggested a deal could be announced in the near future (What Grant may be waiting on).

....

O’Neal was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers last month, a move that Nash reportedly supported - if not pushed for - in a meeting with Kerr.

“We had some financial constraints, so I think people saw it coming,” Nash said about the trade that brought centre Ben Wallace and guard Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix. “They’re trying to do some things that give them flexibility to make some moves. We maybe don’t have the deep pockets of some of the other teams, which could be a disadvantage, but I still believe in everybody there and still think we can build a winner.”

Nash said that his team never got in sync last year because of several new faces and a mid-season coaching change.

He said the Suns must continue to play their trademark up-tempo style, which was re-instituted at midseason by new coach Alvin Gentry. Phoenix had been trying a slower, more defensive-oriented style under Terry Porter, who was fired after just 51 games.

“I think it’s natural for the players we have,” he said. “It suits all of our guys. For us to try and conform to another style would be counterproductive.”

It sounds like we're going to try and be competitive. I think that confirms us keeping STAT and trying to sign a few free agents.

it's more than obvious that we are not trying to win a 'ship here, all we are trying to do is get back to the playoffs. we are back to taking "baby steps". It took us 10+ years after our Finals apperance in '93 to get back to being contenders. hope that's not the case, but at this pace, it sure looks like it.

[1] He has a point regarding Suns current personnel are "suited" for the uptempo.
Coach = Uptempo
Captain/Leader/MVP = Uptempo
Veterans = Uptempo (Richardson,Hill, Barbosa, Stoudemire etc)

NO ONE on the Suns at the moment is a "defensive" slow-it-down player type.

The rookies are... well.. ROOKIES.

They signed Gentry and Im sure they will sign Nash, they will RUN and GUN until Nash retires, and/or gets an offer too good to refuse.
Hence, Kerr is drafting players who have natural defensive instincts already. Those guy can run and gun for the next 2 seasons or 3, but have natural ability to defend, Lopez with his energy and length, Clark with his length and versatility and agility, Dragic etc..
Pretty much the Suns best 4 players need to GO if they plan to change "style" not to mention the coach... but with this system the Rookies have a good chance to develop offensive instincts and gain confidence.... you cant develop well when expending all your effort running defending... confidence is gained at offensive end too.

One thing I meant to add and didn't: I suspect Suns plans to pick up Nash's option is contingent on him signing an extension before August 1. After August 1 his contract becomes 100% guaranteed.

So, we are going back to SSOL and attempting to meet what we have achieved the last couple of years, which means 2nd-round exit at best? With no hope to win a title at least 3 more years after Nash is gone, i.e. 7 years from now?

Why is anybody interested in that? :(

I say the Suns should sign Marion and try to make like it's 2006 again.

Okay, now that its almost official that the Suns are going to keep Nash and most likely Amare. The Suns need to move on the Tyson Chandler trade asap, sign Grant Hill and possibly Wilcox/McDyess. We are not title contenders because the lack of defense in the perimeter but will easily get us past the first round.

However, if the Suns create good chemistry, we will be surprise how much further they can go. If the Lakers lose both Ariza and Odom, the Artest signing won't be that impacting. I personally thing that they are 3 teams that are better than us in the western conference. The Lakers, spurs and blazers have better talent than us but with the Chandler trade, I think we won't be to far behind.

After yesterdays free agent signings, i dont think it is possible with our cap situation to actually challenge for a title. The rich got richer. the Lakers, Celtics, Cavs, I mean with the talent on the Lakers, especially if they also resign Odom, i cant see beating them in a series. At this point we are either rebuilding, or just fielding a team to entertain and compete to draw fans. Just putting butts in the seats, for maby a playoff run, but even with keeping Amare and getting Chandler, do you really think our roster at that point contends with the lakers and celtics. I am still all for good basketball, and think we should put a good product on the court, or no one will want to watch.

I can see the Lakers targetting Barnes if Odom goes, he'd be a good fit there

I think he'll kind of mess with Phil's whole Zen calm if he does .....

man just think of a lineup:

fisher - bryant - artest - odom - gasol

that´s real awesome - and nothing we can put anything against.

so let´s rebuild. it tough, it will hurt but come on kerr, just do it.

Props to the great one
