Tanguay: G. Davis drawing interest from S.A., Det and N.Y.

Post#1 » by campybatman » Fri Jul 3, 2009 3:36 am

I was told earlier by a source close to the Davis camp that the Spurs, Pistons, Grizzlies and Knicks were interested in restricted free agent Glen Davis. Since Zach Randolph has signed with Memphis it would seem they would no longer be in the Big Baby sweepstakes.

Detroit just signed Charlie V and Ben Gordon, do they even have any space left?
(and i assume since they went in to the off-season with cap space they dont get a MLE right?)

We need to keep Davis, there are enough holes for us to plug with our limited funds as is

Detroit just signed Villanueva and have Maxiell - I don't see them being interested. Memphis just traded for Randolph, picked Thabeet, drafted Arthur last year and want to resign Warrick - I don't see their interest. I don't think NY will cut into 2010 cap space for Davis. Finally, I would like San Antonio to offer Davis a contract so it takes them out of the Sheed sweepstakes.

Detroit is really the only one to worry about with Baby. New York will only offer a short term deal (1 year) and SA is going to get either Sheed or McDyess probably. Detroit is the one to keep an eye on. IMO.

If we get Sheed, we don't need Baby and Scal, and we're stuck with Scal. If the ownership wants to pay the price fine, but we really need a rebounder more than we need another jump-shooting big, with Powe out of the picture.

I think there's legitimate interest in Davis, but not to start. Of these teams, the Spurs might make the most sense if they move on from Gooden. The Pistons already have Maxiell while the Knicks have Harrington and probably will resign Lee.

We better not just let him walk away----Ainge must work out a sign and trade---We've been going BACKWARDS ever since Game 6---it seems nobody really wants to play in Boston.

Yep. Early Bird Rights. And no longer limited to the MLE amount, even, due to the Arenas exception.

Celtics_Champs Tanguay has been wrong since the start. He said Sheed was flying out to Boston and that did not happen. He was convinced Sheed would sign here and he did not happen either. The guy is a hack and I am sorry that this guys reports on the celtics. Nothing he has said has happened and there is really no reason to believe anything his says will.

I'm not phased ... Ainge will resign him. It's natural teams will show interest. But we do need to keep a young Forward like Davis around.

I'm worried. Danny offered Rasheed two years and he wants three. Offered Marbury a one year minimum deal and he's looking elsewhere. Baby getting offers from other teams. Looks like the Posey situation all over again. :( We need to get all 3 of these guys to have a formidable team.

I'm not interested in seeing Davis return. However, if after August, there's no alternatives available like Bass, Kleiza or even Kurz. Then I'll say, resign Davis. But Ainge should take the wait-and-see approach through next month. If he gets an offer that's at or more than $3M, pass on him.

Agreed. Davis is not that good but I don't want our whole bench to be minimum guys..

Sadly, this is true. We've been losing out on EVERY free agent for awhile now. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Sheed sign somewhere else despite all the interest we've shown in him.

The Pistons are really keen on him and it seems that he may well indeed be leaving Boston:

Glen “Big Baby” Davis may not make is back to Boston. After a strong performance in the playoffs against the Bulls, he’s drawing interest from several teams, including Detroit, as a restricted free agent. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

I don't think we NEED all three, but we definitely need Marbury and at least one of Wallace/Davis. My preference would be to resign Marbury using the LLE (or an equivalent salary using their Bird's rights, if they have them) and to sign Wallace using the MLE. Bring in a defensive-minded swingman like Bowen to go along with House, and I would be pretty happy. While it would be great to bring Davis back as well, if you sign Wallace you are pretty much committing to a three man big man rotation of Garnett/Perkins/Wallace. Any other big man on the team will likely get spot minutes barring injury, and I am not sure a) Davis would be very happy in a fourth big man role in that situatiton, and b) that the Celtics should spend the $4 or $5 million a season it would take to bring Davis back if he is mainly going to be an insurance policy. It would make more sense financially to bring in a veteran like Raef LaFrentz (just throwing his name out there as an example) for the minimum who would be happy averaging 5-10 mpg, and seeing a lot of games where he doesn't see any action at all.
