Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
The lure, and prestige, of a starter in the NBA.
Orlando - great weather, lots of entertainment for Rashweed's kids, a laid back, whiny coach.
C: Dwight Howard
PF: Rasheed Wallace
SF: Rashard Lewis
SG: Vince Carter
PG: Jameer Nelson
San Antonio - ditto the weather, lots of space, disciplined coach and team.
C: Rasheed Wallace (in classification, but the role of a PF)
PF: Timmy Duncan (in classification, but the role of a C)
SF: Richard Jefferson
SG: Manu Ginoboli
PG: Tony Parker
Boston - Owner Wyc Grousbeck's knocks on your door with flowers and chocolate's (dramatization),
laid back coach who adores you,
KG's intensity, Ray's coolness under Pressure, and SuperMan Paul Pierce
C: Kendrick Perkins, backed up by humble Rasheed Wallace
PF: Kevin Garnett
SF: Paul Pierce
SG: Ray Allen
PG: Rajon Rondo
Does anyone see the problem with the Celtics storyline???
MLE's being equal, even if the Celtics tack on 8% raises, whether it's a 2, 3 or 4 year deal;
Do you See the Problem !!!

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
Why can't we start Rasheed and let Perkins come off the bench? Perk almost never plays in crunch time anyways..he doesn't play alot minutes and is always in foul trouble..give Sheed the starting job and get Perkins off the bench..just get Sheed...

It doesn't matter who starts the game all that matters is who finish the game and Wallace will finish most games he doesn't start. I think a lot is being made really out of nothing. It comes down to MONEY. All three teams has a lot to offer and my guess is whoever offers the most money will win out.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
I'd absolutely hate it if they promised Sheed a starting spot just so we could land him. I mean, Perk might agree to it since he's a team-first kinda guy, but then again, he's only on his second contract. He might want to start to keep his numbers up. It could go either way with him.
If Rasheed insists on being a starter, then I say "Too bad. You have to earn it". If he outplays Perk for it during training camp, then I have no problem with that. Perk's paid his dues and contributed too much to this team. To just give his spot away without letting him compete for it would be disrespectful in my eyes.

The lineup with Rasheed replacing Perk would be great for Rondo with 4 solid jumpshooters on the floor. But I agree with you, CeltsfanSinceBirth.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
Orlando sure seems to have some advantages for Sheed.
Natural starting spot next to true defensive center
Low taxes
Good weather during the actual NBA season
Whatever else makes various athletes like to live there
The Celts may have to offer more money (i.e., years) to overcome that.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
Orlando would be the logical choice, tbh, for the reasons Fencer mentioned. He'll, at the very least, get starter minutes or as many minutes as he wants here though. I'd assume he'd be the main backup to both Perk and KG, and both of those two would only get 28-32 minutes per night, leaving approximately 36 a night to the rest of our bigs.

Well, Wallace would also be the back-up of Garnett as well. Even if Wallace comes off the bench, I think there is definitely the opportunity there for him to get essentially starter minutes. I don't see either Perkins or Garnett getting more than 30 mpg, so that leaves about 36 minutes every game for Wallace (and whoever else the Celtics bring in). If they do sign Wallace, they probably won't re-sign Glen Davis, so any other big man they bring in (Moore, Swift, Sweeney) will likely see minimal time (10 mpg max, imo, and probably closer to 5). So I could easily see Wallace getting 25-30 mpg even off the bench.

In the end, the money's not even the same. Neither Texas nor Florida has state income tax, so there's that too, in addition to the better weather and opportunity to start. Think Mass' state income tax is 5.3%
Mid-level over three years, not having to pay that tax is worth approximately an extra million.
Just another thing to consider for him.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
I don't think starting versus super-sub is that big a deal for Sheed, he knows he is being courted to be on the floor when it counts. By all reports he is as unselfish a teammate as they come. I think the factors come down to which situation has the most promising chance of a championship, which situation has the best lockerroom (the reported concern about egos) and which city has the best environment for his family.
I think we stack up well on the first two counts... but it is also somewhat of a perceptions game, and who knows how different the view is from the inside of the NBA as opposed to the fans' view.
As to the third, Boston will never have Orlando's weather, taxes, available real estate, but Boston does have cultural capital that neither San Antonio nor Orlando can touch. Now whether that counts for much of anything in the age of the Internet is another question, but if Sheed is looking to provide his family a diverse, vibrant urban experience - Boston wins this one as well.
Gotta wonder however how much of Boston's reputation for racial strife may play into any decision, although my brothers who live in Tampa (transplants) tell me that the Florida state KKK lies up the road on the way to Orlando, so I think if you are looking for the worst you can find it anywhere (sadly).
I would think Sheed would rather remain in an urban center and on the east coast at that. Just my guess.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
Good points, Fencer reregistered and Zin5.
The best Celtics counter, since the potential is there for Sheed to play big minutes
(especially when KG or Perk are out due to injury),
and since they only offered a 2 year deal,
is a Sign & Trade for Two Years at $7 Million Per Year.
Now, with Detroit unfortunately landing Ben Gordon in free agency,
the ability to send them Tony Allen or J. R. Giddens as a backup to Rip Hamilton is poof.
However, they would still take picks, cash or a SUITABLE player,
especially if they lose Antonio McDyess and possibly may be shopping Rip Hamilton.
In any event, Ben Gordon can be paired with Rodney Stuckey where
Stuckey guards the SG and Gordon guards the PG, if necessary.
This trade will work if Detroit makes the first year of Ben Gordon's 5 year/$55 million contract
a little less than $11 million, which would not be unreasonable.
Detroit Signs & Trades Rasheed Wallace to Boston for 2 years at $7 Million Per Year
Boston Sends Detroit Brian Scalabrine
Boston Sends Memphis Tony Allen & Gabe Pruitt (Giddens can be substituted for Tony Allen)
Memphis Sends Boston 2009 #36 Pick Sam Young
Memphis Sends Detroit 2011 Second Round Pick (Top 55 Protected to Houston)
Detroit Depth Chart (12 Players plus one more FA)
C: Kwame Brown / Jason Maxiell
PF: Charlie Villanueva / Brian Scalabrine
SF: Tayshawn Prince / 2009 #15 Pick Austin Daye / 2009 #35 Pick DaJuan Summers
SG: Rip Hamilton / Ben Gordon / Aaron Affalo
PG: Rodney Stuckey / Will Bynum
Boston Depth Chart (12 players plus a FA mobile PF and FA full sized Wing)
C: Kendrick Perkins / Rasheed Wallace / Glen Davis
PF: Kevin Garnett / Rasheed Wallace / Glen Davis
SF: Paul Pierce / Bill Walker / 2009 #36 Pick Sam Young
SG: Ray Allen / J. R. Giddens
PG: Rajon Rondo / Eddie House / Lester Hudson
That's only 12 players, the Celtics have the full MLE and LLE to pick up a mobile PF and
full sized Wing.
Memphis Depth Chart (13 players plus another FA PG probably)
C: Marc Gasol / Hasheem Thabeet / Hamed Haddadi
PF: Zach Randolph / Hakeem Warrick (RFA) / Darrell Arthur
SF: Rudy Gay / Marko Jaric / 2009 #27 Pick DeMarre Carroll
SG: OJ Mayo / Tony Allen
PG: Mike Conley / Gabe Pruitt
Detroit, who only has one PF with now,
gets Brian Scalabrine and a 2011 2nd Round pick from Memphis for giving Rasheed a S&T.
Memphis gets a outstanding defensive SG (Tony) and outstanding defensive PG (Pruitt)
in exchangefor their 2009 #36 Pick and 2011 Second Round Pick.
The Celtics get Rasheed Wallace and 2009 #36 Pick Sam Young
in exchange for Brian Scalabrine, Tony Allen and Gabe Pruitt.

We can offer him a better chance to win. SA is not getting by LA and Orlando even with Sheed is not better than us and possible the Cavs with Shaq. If Sheed truly has gas left in the tank he could beat Perk for the starting spot especially given that he(sheed) fits better with Rondo.

Jammer these trades are not going to happen. You always look at trades through the Celtics eyes. Memphis and Detroit don't want to add salaries to their caps, this is why these trades won't go. As far as Wallace, if he goes to another team then so be it. Then the Celtics go after Joe Smith, McDyess, Varejao, Wilcox etc. Wallace isn't the only free agent out there.

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
If Sheed is worried about starting for whatever team he signs for, Boston can just show them the MRIs of KG's knees. He could have the potential to start half of the season

Re: Starting in Orlando or San Antonio vs. Backing Up Perk
I think Wallace would actually benefit from coming off the Boston bench. He can come in with the second unit and actually get some scoring looks. With the Spurs and Magic he is the last option for those teams. Although if I'm Rasheed I'd have a hard time passing up San Antonio.
