Does anybody know - can you do a three way trade with sign and trades?
For example, Detroit sign and trades Iverson to Indiana for TJ Ford who goes to Chicago for Ben Gordon who is signed and traded to Detroit...

I believe this is possible.
Two, three, four teams…
as long as the player is
technically signed to a
contract and that salaries
match, there shouldn't
be a problem.

Re: Trade Question
As long as salaries match and the deal works via the CBA, but any player coming off a rookie contract is going to be near impossible to work this with, since they will be getting a huge raise that will make them Base Year Compensation. Basically, if Gordon's new contract starts at $10 million, he'd really only count as $5 million in outgoing salaries from Chicago (meaning they can't take on TJ Ford in the deal without adding several other players), but he counts at the full salary incoming to Detroit. That throws a major wrench in the deal.

So Gordon is still considered to be coming off his rookie contract? I thought that signing the 1 year qualifying offer last year was the end of that.
Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, it's bobsled time!

Re: Trade Question
It's not so much that they HAVE to be coming off a rookie contract, it's what they were paid in the last year of their last contract, and how big of a raise they're getting. Whenever someone's coming off their rookie contract (which yes, includes the qualifying offer FROM the rookie contract), they tend to fall in line with what would qualify for BYC.

Hmm... I think it comes out to being really close to working on the example. With BYC, I think the first year of Gordon's deal would probably have to start right at about $10.5 million for Chicago to take back Ford. And Iverson's deal would have to start at between about $6.7 million and $10.5 million for us to receive him and send Ford out. Of course, would Chicago want Ford as a backup PG? Probably not.

If Gordon's first year deal is $10.5 million, then he only counts outgoing from Chicago as $5.25 million. Multiplied by 125%, and that's $6.5626 million, and add the $100 grand and that comes out to $6.66 million. Ford's salary is $8.5, so that doesn't come close to working.
Gordon's 1st year salary would have to be at minimum $13.44 million for Chicago to be able to S&T him, and get TJ Ford in return. Keep that in mind. $13.44 million/2 = 6.72 * 1.25 = 8.4 + .1 = $8.5 million (Ford's salary).
Ain't gonna work. That means that Villanueva has to have a 1st year salary of basically the MLE, as that would tap out Detroit's cap space right there.
Just not working.

Re: Trade Question
OR, if the 1st year of Gordon's new contract isn't more than $7.68 million (highly unlikely), he would NOT be Base Year Compensation, thus making the deal work as well.

Re: Trade Question
My bad. I was thinking of partial BYC. I guess Gordon would be full?
