Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
Lets say okur finishes his career in utah, what would he have to do to get his number raised? Is there anything he could possibly do in anyones mind? What exactly constitutes a player getting his number retired? Jeff didnt necessarily have the best stats but sure enough he's up there.
Just reading the article and memo's words it got me to thinking and besides the free agent talk is a little down right now, so why not a fresh topic?

Yes, I think he needs 2 more years of good service. Hornacek and Griffith never were all-stars remember. AK will have his number retired, he has an all-star game and lots of years. He will get it. Okur just need that distinction of having spent a majority of his career here. He is 30 now, so 6 or 7 years is left aprox.

Re: Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
One more multi-year deal with us and it probably happens. One time all-star (Horny never made it with us) and really clutch (especially in 06-07). However, if he goes back to his inconsistent ways then definitely not.
I would love to see us have a ring of honor, where we could just have a banner or something with players names and only retire the numbers of legends like Stockton, Malone, Pistol, Eaton, etc. It would probably have to be some kind of display inside by the consessions though. The ring of honor could be for even role players like Harpring, Eisley, Russell, Palicio, McLeod, and even Ostertag who were with us a while but not good enough to have their number retired.

Lets see, who else can go on the ring of honor list? Thurl for sure, Collins has put in a lot of years. To me the ring is about longevity. Obviously they were good enough to be kept around for a decade. Maybe also some players who had fewer years at a higher level. Ricky Green comes to mind.

I am not quite sure 47 is in the rafters quite yet. If he sticks around and is apart of a couple of more WCF teams and maybe a finals team he could make it, but as off now I think he is on the fence with me, and my guess is on the wrong side.
Memo is probably in the same boat. He could certainly use a couple of more all-star games, and a finals appearance would cement him in there.
Personally I think #8 is the closest of all of them.

Keefe wasn't around long enough. Palacio and McLeod? No way. Ostertag would be one of the first guys in.

DR my man, Palicio and McLeod was a joke.
Yeah Collins just for longevity and taking charges.

If Okur has a good year for Okur he's an allstar again this year.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

The ring is not worth it, no second place finishes in jersey retirements.
If you base retiring a jersey on how a starter compares in both loyal number of years and stats to players that had their jerseys retired playing the same position, then he will make it. Especially if he plays out another multi year contract.

Both players have been a 1 time all star. If you look at the comparison Memo will always win the scoring. Especially the 3's 486 to 0 for 2! The rebounding and assists wash. Memo has played less than half the games that Eaton did.
How would it be to have a center that career averaged 3.5 blocks a gome right now! 363 compared to 3,064. Many forget how much of a defensive pressence he was.
If memo stays loyal he will be swinging from the rafters.

I could see Harpring getting his jersey retired. Wouldn't mind it either, dude has been around for a long time now and has been solid for the franchise.

Re: Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
At this point I dont see any current Jazzman having their number retired. That said if Deron continues to be an all-star caliber player over his career I think No. 8 gets hung. Memo would need to finish his career in Utah playing another 6-7 years. All while maintaining good stats and being a valued piece to the Jazz making the playoffs year in and year out. Right now Memos career feels a little like Thurl Baileys but Memo is a slightly better player and plays a larger role in the Jazz offense.
People who are looking at only stats dont understand why someone beloved by fans and the origination deserves to have their jersey retired. Jeff Hornacek was more then 14ppg, 4apg, 2.5rpg, and 1spg in a Jazz uniform. Jeff was the 3rd key piece to our finals runs. He played good "d" and had heart... something these newer stars on the team seem to lack. Mark Eaton was a key fixture defensivly in the league for 10 years. Dont forget his 2 DPOY awards, his all-star appearance, and by the way he actually received a few votes for MVP in both 84-85 and 88-89. Mark lead the league in block 4 times and finished 2nd 3 times. He is 5th for his career in block shots with only 11 seasons. Everyone ahead of him on that list played between 17-20 seasons in the NBA. Mark was there in the years where the Jazz became what we know them today. I tell you what if the Jazz had Mark Eaton in his prime during the years we went the the Finals we would have won those two years and likely more.
Stats are key but not everything!

No chance. The only way he MIGHT get it is if Larry was still alive.
I doubt AK will either even tho he probably should.

AK will like Griff did, Harpring won't, just like Thurl didn't (when Larry was alive).

Re: Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
you gotta have significant contributions and show loyalty. loyalty is more than just staying where the money is. and contributions are more than just a couple of all-star appearances.
deron could if he stays here. so COULD memo and ak (if they show more loyalty throughout their career here)

The Jazz will put almost anything in the rafters (Midwest Division Champs! w00t!) so why not Memo's number? Let's retire Thurl's while we're at it. After all, he's such a nice guy. And he's Mormon now, too.

Re: Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
No way in high hell that Okur gets his # retired here unless one thing happens. He wins a championship. His numbers alone while playing for the Jazz are not near good enough. Hornacek is retired cuz he was an integral part of those 2 championship run teams. He was the missing piece it took to get into the Finals.
And to boot, Okur is a 30 yr old with a bad back. He has 3 seasons of solid ball left, max. It took forever to get Dantley's # retired, so what makes Memo or anyone else think his # should hang? The thought is absurd.

You are wrong. Sorry. There are pleny of players in the rafters without rings, two of whitch have 1 or less all-star games. Memo and AK are up there.

Re: Does Okur have any chance of having his number retired?
I was surprised when I read the interview of Memo expressing his desire to have his number retired because I thought it was a very long shot but, the more I think of it, the more I think he might have a chance.
However, for that to happen, he needs to stay a few more years and be a major part in one or two deep playoffs runs. Something like being a solid 3rd guy with clutch contributions. It sounds like something he can do (and has already done).
