So Grant Hill can start on the Eastern Conf. Champs Orlando Magic but he is not go enough to be a backup on the Celtics.

Not making much sense cfan79.

Grant Hill would be a great pickup and the Celtics would be lucky if they got him.

LOL, well they did lose 2 of their starters and have thus far only replaced them with Vince.

Grant Hill and Doc have always had love for each other. You think Doc wouldn't like him that much considering Grant was hurt so much and that is why Rivers got fired in Orlando.

He'd be a solid pickup for any contending team.

Not a huge fan of the Grant Hill possibility. Sure, he would improve our bench a great deal offensively, but we still need a defensive stopper like Bruce Bowen a lot more, imo. I don't think you can send Grant Hill into game 7 of the 2010 ECFs and tell him to do whatever you can to slow down LeBron James, and we currently don't have anyone on the bench who can. I know our bench stunk last season offensively, but if we can sign Rasheed Wallace and re-sign Stephon Marbury (and he is able to get closer to his former self), that would go a long way toward curing our offensive woes.

Carney isn't terrible, but I'd like someone more experienced and could cost more than Hill.
Barnes is the only debatable one, because he'd have a similar pricetag and does a lot on D.
Marion, obviously he's better, but it'd cost the full MLE.
Parker's out of the question now that Toronto can't sign and trade him.

EDIT: Also, anyone who I mentioned would cost more than Hill: We lose a chance at your sig lovefest in Sheed.

You might be right about the $, but what the heck we only might have a 3-4 year window. The teams that win are usually the ones that spend big money.

My point is cost effectiveness. I'd much rather have Sheed/Hill than just Marion, even though Marion's the best of the three. I'm with you on spending money, which is why I'd be fine if we made a Scal/TA trade for Posey and why I'd give Sheed four years just to get him for the next two.

Grant Hill would be just about perfect for us IMO. If he can give Pierce and Ray a couple minutes of rest a game I would be thrilled. People want too much. We aren't getting Marion and Rasheed both in here. So I would rather have G.Hill, than having to pray for a solid season by Bill Walker or JR Giddens.

Rondo/Marbury
Ray/House/Hill
Pierce/Hill/Walker
KG/Big Baby/Scal
Perk/Sheed

Boom...18.

Warrick is a PF. Would you ask Scal to play 1st SF off the bench? Not if you could do everything in your power to find a true SF. Warrick isnt a strong player, I probably wouldnt even trade Scal for him.

Barnes is a chucker with a poor attitude. You cant just look at his #'s either. Have you not noticed the lack of support for Barnes on our board? His game reminds me of a slightly poorer man's Al Thornton at SF. Every time i see Barnes play he forces bad shots.

Marion probably wont come here for what we can offer and Toronto is doing everything they can to keep him. I could speculate about Odom coming here for the MLE too since hes getting pinched in LA now, hell i could speculate about Turk coming here for the MLE for a ring. Its rather outlandish speculation for all three of those guys.

Parker and Carney, I like them both, but not over Hill. Parker is not a true SF, so again youre forcing a guy to play out of his comfort zone. If we knew bill walker was ready to be the first SF off the bench, then Parker would be great as a backup SG (and SF insurance). Carney has never done ANYTHING off the bench, he had a couple nice starts last year but that will never be his role for us. Grooming Bill Walker would be wiser than taking Carney.

You have to think about the value Hill presents. Hes played with multiple superstars, hes respected by the entire league, and our coach already has experience with him. Whats not to love??

Am I the only one who wants to see Bill Walker develop on the wing and quit bringing in old guys......

Its time to start letting some of our young players develop or they will not be ready when the inevitable happens

I think Walker is still capable of getting some minutes next season. I dont know how it will look when the season starts but I imagine Hill play the part of backup pg on offense with House playing sg and Hill covering the sg and House on pgs on the defensive end.

I am not a huge Grant Hill fan BUT he plays the versatile all-court kinda game that Doc loves. Doc wants all his guys to be a threat to pass, shoot, or drive. Hill is a complete player - unlike Bowen, Warrick, Barnes, Marion etc.

Some of those guys are much better then Hill (Marion for example) but it still Hill is among the most Doc friendly of those players.

Ok who is a better option than Grant Hill?

I'd rather have any of these guys.

Hakim Warrick
Rodney Carney
Matt Barnes
Shawn Marion
Anthony Parker

Highlight Barnes, who would be available at the MLE and we could still get Sheed. The do a deal for the combo guard. Get 3 quality bench players for the 8 man rotation, and then use low cost guys for everything else.

im assuming you meant to say we give Barnes the vet min. and the MLE to Sheed?

Barnes would be great - as a last resort. He is not a versatile player and anyone who thinks his passing ability is a selling point... i certainly never saw that game. Hes played with mostly run and gun teams for his pro career and he wont be seeing much of that play style in the second unit.
Barnes isnt a very mature player on defense, and im not talking about how he slides his feet. Hes been called 'dirty' by many players.

I just don't understand why people would want Matt Barnes, just give the mins to Scal at least he can make shots consistently.

If there is a way to do Sheed and Hill, you got to do that. Beyond the obvious Hill and Sheed allow you to use House as a back up PG because you have guys through out the line up who can handle the ball and create shots.

Looking at the FA market for tall athletic defensive 3s, I think that working out a trade with someone like GS or Portland for a SF is probably in our best interest. Grant Hill would work great against the majority of teams, but we need to be worried about potential playoff matchups. You don't always have to matchup with the other teams, but I don't see Hill giving us enough of an advantage on offense to make up for what we are going to lose at the other end of the floor.

If the Celtics think they just offer Grant Hill a LLE,
when he is getting full MLE offers from Phoenix and New York,
they are being amateurish.

Sort of like when they nickle-dimed James Posey in 2007,
yes, 2007, when they could have had him without an option year
if they offered the full MLE and gave House the LLE.

The savvy thing to do is dump
2 of Brian Scalabrine, Tony Allen, Gabe Pruitt, Billy Walker, J. R. Giddens
to a team with cap room in 3 way with Phoenix
to get Hill the $4 million, or more, per year that he deserves;
especially since you want to sign Grant for 2 years.
Grant's versatility to play 3 positions merits the full MLE in itself.
You get a backup SF, a mobile PF, and a long 6' 8" SG.

sort of like they were being ameteurish in the sheed negotiations?

methinks ainge & co actually know a bit more about running a team than you.

posey didn't deserve 4 mle years, he didn't even deserve the 3 that we offered him, and now NO would love to dump his contract. ainge played that right.

hill either wants to win a title or he wants to get paid. we'll see which it is. i could see him staying in phx because he's got roots there. if he goes to NY (and no, they will not offer him the full MLE, please, he's 36 and is a backup talent at this point), then he is just chasing the $$s. nothing we can do. neither of those teams has a shot at a ring.

in any case i don't think we have any choice here because PHX isn't going to want to pay our garbage just to have the privilege of us overpaying grant hill. i suspect they'd rather just save their money for a better player down the road than take on our crap in a sign-n-trade.
