Kerr's Worst Move?
I was on hoopshype.com and they listed the Shaq trade as the worst in Kerr's career. I disagree and think while bad it's not nearly his worst.
For me it's
Traded forward Kurt Thomas and the first-round picks of 2008 and 2010 to the Seattle Supersonics for a future conditional second-round pick and cash.
What's your worst move?

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
The Kurt Thomas move was all Sarver so I wouldn't blame Kerr for that to much, he could only trade with a team that had capspace and didn't have any leverage.
The worst Kerr move would be drafting Robin Lopez over guys like Speights, Mcgee, Hickson, Lee, Jordan, Chalmers, etc...

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
Leaving TNT and becoming GM of the Suns was the worst move Kerr has ever made.
If you want want his worse move as GM, it is obviously the signing of Porter.

Trading away Kurt Thomas and 2 unprotected first rounders for nothing.... I don't think anything could top that. We're going to be feeling that move for awhile.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
The thing that made the trade of KT/1sts for nothing such a horrible move is the lux tax doesn't get counted until midseason. He could have waited to make a deal.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
KT trade easy. Not only did we move one of our best post defenders in the prime of SSOL, we gave them our picks which now prevents us from rebuilding this off-season.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
definitely KT, as ruiner said, had he waited we might have gotten Gasol for that package....
The Shaq trade was made with the right intentions - I don't have too many bad feelings about that, nowhere near as bad as the JRich move (which i must admit I didn't mind when i first heard about it)

I'm going to join the group and say the KT trade was the worst during Kerr's tenure. I didn't mind the Shaq or JRich trades, though I certainly miss Boris Diaw now.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
The KT move had to be the worst. C'mon, he ended up getting traded to play for the SPURS! And one of the people he got traded for (Brent Barry) immediately got released and, after giving a slight hint that he might sign with PHX, ended up going back to... you guessed it the SPURS! I think the only way that trade could have been worse is if we had included Nash in the deal and received a Mario Elie jersey instead of cash.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
are you serious?
any of you mentioning Kerr as the reason for trading Kurt Thoms - are you serious? sorry but that was all Sarver - get your facts right if you are going to bring an opinion. no GM in their right mind makes that trade unless they were told
his worst move was trading JRich for Diaw/Bell - and I must admit, I thought it was a good trade but JRich didn't make one big shot the last month of the season
Shaq for Marion / Banks - well you can blame Dumtoni for that one as they had to offload Banks contract. If Dumtoni didn't sign Banks, Marion's trade value would have been much higher then Shaqw.

That was kerr's fault. Trimming payroll is one thing but selling players with unprotected picks when they had another 7 months to figure out the situation falls solely on the GM.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
It is hard for us to speculate where exactly a trade comes from. Obviously the KT trade was financially motivated, which would make you think that the idea probably originated with the owner. However, a GM is tasked with the day to day runnings of a team. I doubt Sarver went to Kerr and said, "Trade KT... and you'd better make sure we get nothing more than a John Paxson Fleer trading card in return."
In reality, Sarver probably said, "Hey we need to shed some salary, or we will be paying a ton of lux tax. I'm not willing to pay that much lux tax." Kerr was likely given the responsibility of shedding the salary through whatever means necessary. So, he still had to seek out and sign off on the deal. Where I think the fault comes in as a GM is that the best deal he could find still cost us two first round draft picks (worth about $3 million on Ebay) for an EXPIRING Kurt Thomas contract.
In my opinion there are 5 ways a trade can be bad:
1) Getting worse talent than you give
2) Causing your team to get locked into a bad contract for a much longer period of time than you would have had otherwise
3) Bettering the cause of one of your direct competitors
4) Disturbing team chemistry/mojo
5) Making a trade that further weakens a position that you are already weak at (i.e. we needed big men and we traded away basically our only C and got nothing to replace him)
I would say this trade at least hits 3 of the 5 (#1, 3, and 5), and I think it also disturbed our chemistry a little (#4). I just don't see how the Shaq or J-Rich deals are even comparable in badness. They were at least made with bettering the team in mind. This deal was 100% financial.

come on now - give me a break. that was all Sarver. Sarver wanted to CUT payroll and not take a chance on not being able to save payroll. i agree the team had until February but Sarver did not want to take a chance so he sold Thomas, not Kerr, Robert Sarver sold Kurt Thomas.
and can anybody even call that a trade - that was not even close to a trade. sorry, that was Sarver

Agree, and it gets worse because after raping us for two unprotected 1st round picks in the deal, Sonics/Thunder traded him to SA for cap space and another first round pick.
Kerr got his lunch eaten on that trade

Ahem - doesn't matter whee the idea came from, it's the execution of it we're talking about. He traded KT before he had to and instead of getting something we gave away two 1st round picks. So it's a terrible, unforgivably bad trade. Why he did it is immaterial.

Re: Kerr's Worst Move?
It's really sad when his best moves so far are:
Not trading Amare at the deadline for trash
Firing the coach HE chose
Drafting and keeping Earl Clark
No trading Barbosa

+1. There are other ways to unload KT without giving up TWO first rounders.

Hopefully resigning would be his next best move.
