James Posey and the Last Hurrah
Yes, it's time for another Bring Back Posey thread.
Here's the thing: it looks like the Celtics are into full blown 'get more vets/win now' mode with the potential two year Sheed deal and the possibility of Hill. I really would like Grant here, but he may actually chose NY for whatever reason. Plus he really is getting up there in years and could break down sooner rather than later.
Posey was so good for us in 2008. He plays tough defense, hits the three, takes the bench role well, and was apparently well liked by our guys. Also, if we end up with the coveted rematch with LA in the finals, I'd like to have one more guy who can defend Kobe and at the same time be able to stare down Artest and say, "Are you kidding me?" (or words to that effect).
If the team goes with the same starting five this year, it would be awesome to have a couple of intense vets mixed in with the young players coming off the bench. Sheed, Posey, Walker, House, Giddens, maybe even Hudson could be a bench with enough firepower and defensive swagger to really make life difficult for teams.
Of course, the Hornets may be thinking the same thing and will want to keep Posey to compete with teams like LA, SA, and Denver. But if they decide to go in another direction and start to retool a bit, they could get out of the longer deal and send Posey back to Boston for short term contracts.
So: Posey for Scal and Tony Allen works as a trade. What else would we have to include to get Posey back? Bringing him here somewhat limits our options for dealing next offseason, but it also gets us right back in the mix as a favorite. This year may be our best shot to win it all again.

I think we should try to sign Barnes if we don't get Grant Hill.

I'd prefer Posey, but if Danny can get Barnes here for good value I'd be satisfied. He's Posey-lite.

Why would they throw in a first roudner or solid young forward for our garbage?
actually, NO never keeps their first rounders anyway so maybe...

Danny didn't want to pay a 2011-12 35yo Posey 7mil last year, and he won't this year. Give it up. We can do better anyways.

I don't know Ainge of course, but to me this move would be Ainge declaring to the world that he screwed up last year. The best year of the contract Ainge wouldn't match has expired, and then toss in that Celtics assets (albeit not great ones) are also lost, I would see this as such a significant admission of mistake that I just can't see Ainge doing it.

I'm on the "Give it up" bandwagon, NO gave Posey a bad contract.. why in the hell would we want it now? Posey is good but not that good, go after Hill or Barnes for realistic money instead of absorbing NO's stupidity. I loved Posey when he was here too.

Although I see your point, I think signing Posey's at that $ to a team that already has Scal is different that turning scal's and Tony's (even if he resigned him only last year) contract into Posey money.

It wouldn't be admitting a mistake at all, since NO would have effectively paid the 1st 2 years of that bad deal. (They've paid the 1st so far, and would be taking our bad contracts back which is like paying the 2nd).
So basically we'd be getting Posey for 3 years for about $13 mil, which is not horrible. It's all about value.
On the other hand, I'd much rather have Hill at the LLE. Plus imo Posey is still overpaid even at 3/13, for a guy who's aging and declining. Also, I think we might be able to turn those expiring contracts into a better player at the deadline.
So I'd pass anyways.

I just don't think it works that way. If Ainge decided it was the right move to get him now, why would he care about the past. I mean who does he have to answer to? The owners would have to be on board to make the trade. Sure the papers could mock him for a day, but would they even? I mean the team right away would be better off.
You also have to figure in that getting rid of Tony and Scal basically pays for one year of Posey's contract. For once I don't know what Ainge's long term plans are so how the contract a fe years from no effects that is probably a big factor.

Posey's contract is horrible and he is not worth it. Cap space could be much better spent going in another direction. It isn't that I don't like the guy, but the Hornets messed up big time by offering him that fourth year, and Danny would only make things worse by absorbing it.

As much as I love the pre-game hugs (man. I miss those) I'll take Hill.

Re: James Posey and the Last Hurrah
James Posey is not the reason we lost last season. The reason we lost was because KG was hurt. Our best player was out for the playoffs and missed a significant portion of the season. Even still, we won just 4 fewer games than we did the year before, in a more competitive league overall. If we had a healthy team, we would have at least made the finals. Posey now has a bad contract, that we should have no interest in. New Orleans knows they made a mistake.

Re: James Posey and the Last Hurrah
How about a big fat NO? Posey has 3 years left in his contract. Celtics' No to mention that the salary cap will be significantly lower next season.

Posey is thirty-two but I dislike his contract. That would put him with Garnett and Wallace for players already under contract through 2011-2012 for Boston.
It would seem odd to me if Ainge were to attempt to reacquire a player for a salary that he wasn't willing to sign him for before he'd signed for that salary with New Orleans. Would that be admitting that you'd made a mistake? Maybe, maybe not.
Also, didn't Posey play more accumulative minutes as a Celtic at power forward in a small lineup with Boston than actually at small forward. I recall reading that...
Personally, I would prefer to take a chance on a possible cheaper alternative which may or may not be there this off-season. It would be nice to have Posey back, but not at his salary.
I wouldn't mind having Marquis Daniels. But Indiana didn't pickup his team option of $7.3M. So I've to assume that Daniels could want more than what Ainge can offer to him.
