Question As Far As Sign-Trades Go..........

Hopefully someone can help me out with this, is it possible for a team that has significant cap space (like a Memphis) to sign a player for another franchise who doesn't have the cap spaceand trade that player to that team? Example: The Grizzlies sign Lamar Odom and trade him for Amare Stoudemire ( Just an ex. Suns fans, lol) But is this possible, and if so can u tell me a time previously when this has happened, if any?

As has been said, what is asked in the original post is not allowed.
But if something from either the Grizzlies or Suns would interest the Lakers, you could get the Lakers involved in this trade and make it a 3 team trade, with the Lakers S&T'ing Odom to the Suns with the Suns sending Amare to the Grizzlies. And whatever other parts are involved in this trade, of course.

How about the Lakers S&Ting Odom and sending him to the Suns, the Suns send Amare to the Grizzlies and then the Grizzlies send Randolph to the Lakers? I mean why wouldn't the Lakers want Randolph? Contrary to what everybody thought, his contract has turned out to be one of the most tradable in the league. I'm sure Sham would agree with me.

I remember that the Celtics did this with Chris Mills, but could only make the trade after a waiting period.

Larry's faq says this:

For three months or until December 15th of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent. This obviously does not apply to the trade completing a sign-and-trade transaction (see question number 76). Interestingly, however, it is unclear whether this rule prevents a player who has been signed-and-traded from being traded agiain prior to three months/December 15 (see question number 80).

Does the Dec 15th part only apply if a player is signed once the season starts? Or has this rule been changed since the "Summer of Pitino" in 1997?

If the rules are the same as back then, a 3 month waiting period that falls entirely within the offseason is as big enough loophole to make the answer to the original question basically "yes."


(On a side note, I feel awfully old, vividly recalling minor transactions from 1997. Chris Mills was traded for Walter McCarty, Dontae' Jones, and John Thomas. At least it took me a moment to remember John Thomas. I also remember being excited about the Travis Knight signing, and later thinking that Tony Battie would have been a beast at PF next to Shaq.)

Seriously, Portland to New York, New York To Clippers, Clippers to Memphis. And BTW, Zach Randolph on the Lakers would be my worst nightmare.........okay maybe my second worst nightmare.

To answer your question (I think it is in the question 80 that is mentioned) it is the later of December 15th or 3 months. So, like was already said, the answer is no.

Ya, I would guess it got changed in the very next CBA (1999), since as long as I've been following bball, this has been the rule.
