Kings sign Tyreke Evans

Post#1 » by KF10 » Thu Jul 9, 2009 7:03 am

The Kings today signed guard Tyreke Evans, their first pick in last month's draft, to a contract, basketball president Geoff Petrie announced. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Evans, the fourth overall selection June 25, played one year at the University of Memphis. The 6-foot-5 guard, 19, led his team to 27 consecutive wins after coach John Calipari moved him from shooting guard to point guard

Need to specify whether we'll be the giver or the recipient of those beatings?

Good pick I think, he'll work well along with Kevin Martin this year. I'm wondering how long the deal was, so if you beat me to it, post the terms.

Yeah I was implying that its gonna be another tough season for us kings fans.

Even with Jason and Spencer having another year of experience under there belt and a healthy(hopefully) Kevin Martin, and I liked our pick of Evans, We are still gonna be one of the worst teams in the league.

I doubt we are going to be another 17-win team though.

A mid-20s/high 20s team? Maybe.

Agreed. I think we need to have the right perspective next season. I just want to see growth in all the young players games, and grow as a team. It might not show up in wins, but it can be a postive step. Then we get another good player in 2010 draft, and sign FO or two and we have a much better team capable of something.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

Exactly. I will be looking for more individual growth than wins. Once these guys mature and learn to play with one another this team could be scary for the future. I still say playoffs by 2010-2011.

Yeah, I would say player development on our young guys is huge next season.

But I would like to see both Hawes and Thompson take a large leap into respectable players around the league not just the usual "young inexperience" players with just potential (even though, they were pretty productive last year).

Having the expectations of growing our core and gelling for the future should be a realistic one. It may not show on the win totals but internally it is bigger than wins IMO.

Umm what makes anyone think the Kings can improve from last place to maybe second to last with this signing?

They need a serious roster shakeup.
The list: jordansbulls, basileus777, celticfan42487, j-rich-, flash3

No one is saying that.

Signing Evans is one step of adding talent to the Kings roster. He is now part of the young core we have. We don't expect Evans to come in and lead us to a successful season (win-wise) but he will come here help the Kings young players' development though.

Besides, having a 17 win season was rock bottom, we can only go up from that. We will be still in the bottom ten teams in the league next year though. But I don't think we are going to be the worst again.

that's what people said about the Blazers when they sucked. Do you even know what a rebuild is? It's like we are a team of vets that suck (Wiz, Clips) we are developing. That is apart of the process. Why would we trade our talented, high potential youth. GTFO

While I agree to an extent, the facts of our situation can't be ignored. Down the stretch, after the firing of Reggie Theus, and after the trades at the deadline we were a dreadful team. More than half our wins came before Theus was fired, after? Not so good. There is a legit possibility that this team could be even worse record wise or more likely, still the worst team record wise. The HUGE positive is at least now there is potential for this team to grow way beyond the initial losing. I'd rather be a young team with tons of potential losing more in the interim, than a mediocre veteran team with no hopes of getting above that middle line of competitiveness.

Maybe so.

You also have to consider last year (especially in the Natt era) we lost countless games in the last 2 minutes or so due to not getting over the hump. i.e. inability to close out games, late turnovers, and etc.

I ultimately believe that we will win at least 20+ games this year. I don't think it is unachievable in any way, shape or form. We are not THAT bad. Well, not 17 win season bad.

That's very true, and the hope should be having a better, experienced coach will help a lot if and when those situations should arrive. This team was actually more competitive on a night to night basis late in the season, something that gives me some hope. Yeah 17 would be tough to do again, unless we're tanking for that number 1 pick baby!!!

Well, I think it is a win win situation for the Kings next year. Regardless of the win totals IMO. If we accomplish our goal to develop our young core of Evans/Thompson/Hawes/Martin. I think that is significant. If the team does not translate wins (but still gained valuable experience and "gelling"), we still have a guaranteed high lotto pick for next year. Wall, Favors, anyone?

But I would like the team to at least get over the 20 point win total mark though. And I'm almost positive we will do that.

if you guys can get your hands on cole aldrich next year you are going to look scary for the future (I like Thompson but he has no where the potential Aldrich has, aldrich can be a 20ppg/10rpg/3bpg player).

Aldrich/JT
Hawes/JT
Garcia/??
KMart/??
Evans/Beno

thats pretty solid, just have to get a defensive minded 3 and a bench and your looking at a playoff team for 5-8 years (maybe even contend when those guys hit their primes).
