Salary Cap Projected to Drop Next Year

Gomes is actually a good financial piece of trade bait, because his $4.35 mil contract is only guaranteed for $1 mil. If we're willing to make deals to sell cap space in 2010, Gomes serves as an instant $3.35 mil in raw cap space .. like a mini-Stackhouse. Gomes can also play too, so a team might keep him for a year, and dump him next year when his deal is also only guaranteed for $1 mil.

Telfair's a tough question though. First, for his production, he's a decently priced option. Many teams are running $4-$6 mil back-up PG's out there. Second, if Rubio doesn't come over, we need him. Flynn's a rookie, and Bobby Brown is a third stringer. However, if Rubio joins us, we should try to ditch him to clear the cap space. Unfortunately, with all the rookie PG's drafted, even an adequately-priced Telfair isn't going to have a lot of takers. Who's out there that can still use a well-priced back-up PG?

Celtics need one. However, they've already traded him away once, so who knows if they'd want him back.

Shrink you've been talking for months about using our cap space in 2010 to facilitate transactions....not necessarily signing the big name guys, but helping the teams that sign them get it done. Just wondering what you think the Wolves might be able to do....specific examples. Do you think it would be similar to the Carney trade last year - i.e. we take get a draft pick just for taking on a couple players? Not doubting your thinking by any means, just wondering what you might have in mind specifically.

Well I'm definitely not as intelligent as shrink, but a few examples that could possibly happen IMO

1) give a team enough cap space to sign that big free agent (exactly like the Carney deal)

2) help a team to cut salary
a) with Charlotte: Henderson + Nazr for Telfair + TPE
b) with Phoenix: Barbosa or JRich + Lopez for TPE

3) to get a team out of the luxury tax (like the Beno trade we made a couple of years ago; or like OKC trade for Kurt Thomas; Thomas, 2 1sts for TPE)
a) with Indiana: Jeff Foster + 2010 1st + cash for TPE
b) with Indiana: Tinsley + 2 1sts + cash for TPE
c) with LA Lakers: Vujacic + 2011 1st + 2 million cash for Telfair + TPE
d) with NO: Chandler + 2010 1st + cash for TPE

-I looked quickly and these are what I came out with; most of the trades value is probably slanted a little bit in the other teams favor, since this is about what the going rate for cap space is right now; but next year, a ton of teams will be wanting to cut salary and there won't be many sellers of cap space, I could see something like (MoPete + 2 future 1sts + 3 million cash for TPE) or (Jeff Foster + 2 future 1sts + 3 million cash for TPE) or a 3 way (Peja, 2 future NO 1sts, 2 future NY 1sts, 6 million cash to Minnesota; Jeffries + TPE to NO; TPE to NY) or even more one sided trades (think of the Kurt Thomas trade to OKC)

The lux may drop $8-$10 mil, and not every team will be able to get under. This will probably mean that getting your lux share will also jump from $3 mil to .. maybe even $6. This is going to create a lot more incentive for teams to get under the lux if the NBA doesn't put in a 1-year lux amnesty period.

There always Marvin Williams next season even if we don't clear more 2010 space. It looks like he may end up staying in ATL for the QO, and will be unrestricted next year. Just had to pimp that some more.

I forgot about the luxury tax payment. This should help us even more.

I'll use New Orleans as an example, if they traded MoPete to us, they would save 6.4 million x 2 = 12.8 million + 6 million in luxury tax payments = 18.8 million dollars in savings; so 3 million cash and 2 firsts are definitely worth 18.8 million in savings for New Orleans
