Three Team: OKC/MEM/LAC

The reported Zach Randolph for Quentin Richardson deal hasn't gone through yet, and I was thinking that the Thunder could get in on the action. Here's the deal:

Clippers send Randolph and Marcus Camby/ receive Earl Watson, Chucky Atkins, D.J. White, and '11 top 10 protected first round pick
Memphis sends Richardson/ receives Randolph
Oklahoma City sends Watson, Atkins, White, '11 top 10 protected first round pick/ receive Camby and Richardson

Clips do it because it saves them between 15 and 17 million this year, and gives them between 12 and 14 million in cap space. They also get a prospect in White and a first round pick. Memphis was already going to do the deal. We do the deal because it gives us a defensive presence in the middle and a good three point shooter. The deal also gives us about 20 million in expiring deals and a guy in Camby that will be attractive to contenders at the trade deadline. The Thunder would still be under the cap for next year and wouldn't add any salary for the 2010-11 season.

I don't think I'd want to give up a 1st round pick and White for a couple of guys whose biggest impact will be this season. Camby is a perfect fit for us, I'm just wishing that he was at least a few years younger.

The Clippers need some sort of talent in return. The guy I really want from OKC is Jeff Green.

I wish he was younger to. If I were making this deal, my first move wouldn't be to offer the first round pick but if it came to that I would. The Thunder will have nine first round picks in four years (2007-10). That is a lot of youth to have to develop all at once. A deal like this would help to cull the numbers a little bit and give guys like an Ibaka minutes to develop at the NBA level.

The talent that the Clippers are getting in this deal is the cap space from which to get into free agency this summer. If you guys want a 3, than guys like a Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, etc. are out there for the bidding. Or the Clippers could use the same tactics that got you guys Camby in the first place, and just take a players contract on from a team looking for salary cap/luxury tax relief. I don't see a deal that the Clippers could do that doesn't involve Blake Griffin in which they would receive Jeff Green.

Return to Oklahoma City Thunder
