Who from the last 10yrs do you wish you could have back?

Post#1 » by Hemingway » Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:35 pm

Lets go back as far as The ML Carr days. Pretend that you could take anyone that we used to have, in the condition and age they were when we had them to round out our roster. Who would you take? Lets not worry about contracts because that would just be silly. You can take ths topic one of 2 ways I suppose. You can share who your favorite roll payers were or you can try to make the best team possible.

Here are some of my choices:

Ryan Gomes, Eric Williams, Andrew DeClerq, and of course Walker.

Ryan Gomes, Eric Williams, Walter McCarty, David Wesley, Kenny Anderson wouldn't be a bad bench squad.

Joe Johnson. He wasn't quite ready for prime-time when we traded him, but he was better than Walker & Giddens are now.

Andrew DeClerq???

Eric Williams in his prime would be a welcome addition behind Pierce, so would Gomes.

When I read the title "Who from the last 10yrs do you wish you could have back?" I immediately thought of Joe Johnson and Billups, but that was more that we gave up on them too early... the young celtics versions of those guys wouldnt be much help, but the mature veteran versions of those guys would be great.

Going back to the type of guys you were talking about... Kevin Gamble, Rick Fox, David Wesley, Tony Battie... all strike me as decent role players that could've been solid contributers had there been better players on the team when they played like there are on our team now.

Dwayne Schintzius? Haha I was just kidding / didnt spell his name right, but you guys remember this stiff?

Andrew DeClerq???

I'm not the one that mentioned him, but I will defend that answer. I loved him when he was here. He was short on skills and athletic ability, but big on hustle and effort. The perfect kind of garbage man for our bench behind KG, Rasheed, Perk, and Baby (maybe).

He didnt asked, "who from our old teams would make us a lock for a title team" he said more or less "which role players from our past do you think could've contributed to this team."

Didnt we get them in the same trade? Seattle maybe?

Shammond was quick, but never put it together. I like the Ukraine train for a while, he is a good pick. He had that weird little jump shot where the ball seemed too far away from his head (like out in front), but he made a decent chunk of his short jumpers and definitely knew his limits range-wise.

Maybe its just the love for seeing a white guy out there with a limited skill set making a difference. It definatly makes you think, man if only I was really tall.

Nobody remembers good ol' Vin Baker??? He was the all-star that never was, because of personal demons.

As they were when they were traded?

1. Al Jefferson. He would make a *great* 4th big next year and (as we know) break out as a near All-Star the year after that. Jefferson phasing in as KG phases out would be the the "best of all possible" worlds for the C's.

2. Joe Johnson. He would be a *great* 3rd wing, able to cover 2 or 3, next year, and break out to be the replacement for R Allen or Pierce as their careers wind down.

3. Chancey Billips (I guess that's more than 10, but still!). He could certainly backup Rondo, and might end up being the C's combo guard starting at the 2.

Going back further still...

4. Ben Wallace. Forget the experimental 3 stuff and let Ben be Ben! Just imagine a Jefferson/Wallace/Perkins...all in their prime...front court.

5. Bruce Bowen. He would have been end of the bench for a few years developing, but he would have turned into a solid reserve defensive stopper.

6. Ryan Gomes. He's still nothing great, but he would be a solid reserve.

...and if we can take back that draft pick we gave up in the Allen trade who could we have gotten? Was it Roy? Green? Somebody good?

Shammond had a few brief flashes of brilliance in Boston, but that was back when the likes of JR Bremer and Brandon Hunter were around. Not exactly rajon Rondo and KG, so showing brilliance was somewhat simple.

No offense to Sham-Rock and Hunter.

Tony Battie-A player that knew is his role on the team. Had a solid mid range jump shot and could play a bit of defense. Plus shot a pretty good % from the field.

Danny Fortson- Solid defender and a very good rebounder. Plus he could careless if he took shots.

Eric Williams- One of my favorite Celtics of all-time. Tough defender who had a very nice post game.

this.

i don't know how there's any real debate about it. those are far and away the 3 best players we had and didn't keep in recent history.

Thats not really the point I was going for. Those guys were not all that good when we had them(well except al). They couldn't start on a crappy team so i doubt they could be good backups on a title team.
