I did the calculations and posted them over in the Trade Forum, but I'll copy what I posted in here:

Financially it makes a lot of sense. Assuming Gerald Wallace picks up his player option he is due $41,025,000 over the next 4 years. Assuming all options get picked up and the Qualifying Offer is extended to Hickson he is due $8,670,224 over the next 4 years. To make the deal work Wally would have to get around 6 million which the Bobcats could then let expire at the end of the year or use for the expiring contract in a trade. Assuming they let Wally expire the Bobcats would save approximately 26 million dollars and get to add a young PF prospect who most in the Cavs organization are extremely high on.

I certainly dont know about Charlotte's financial situation but 26 million dollars is nothing to sneeze at. On top of that I could definately see Gilbert allowing Ferry to throw in the 3 million maximum in cash that is allowed to be included in a trade, which would bump the total to just under 30 million dollars.

Thats why it makes sense. Not saying it is likely or is even really being talked about, but its hardly as unfair as its being labeled when you take a step back and look at the big picture.

Basically Bob Finnan is a douchebag:

Forget Gerald Wallace
First of all, I did throw out an unsubstantiated rumor last night that said the Cavs might be interested in sending J.J. Hickson and Wally Szczerbiak to the Charlotte Bobcats for swingman Gerald Wallace in a sign-and-trade.

I explained that it probably wouldn't happen, since Wallace has $40 million left on his contract over the next four years.

The only reason the Bobcats would do this is in a salary dump.

I was told by a reputable source that the Cavs had not talked about anything even close to this.

So, let's put this out of our heads. These things seem to take on a life of their own sometimes.

I think Wallace would be a good fit in Cleveland. But it appears that the Cavs are very close to agreeing on a two-year contract with Anthony Parker.

Look if we add a guy now even with a big contract, we are still taking Z and Shaq's combined about 30 million off the books. Thats plenty to sign Bron and eonough to make a serious push towards Bosh. Especially with the Salary Cap going down again teams like New York and New Jersey wasted all of thier time. So go for it. G-force would be nasty. Wally is gone whether we S&T him or not and JJ won't see much playing time with DJ finishing off last year strong, so why the hell not just do it. As long as Lebron comes back, Mo, West and AV are locked up for a while, and G-force would be here for four years, you have your core and will be able to be a contender for a lot of years regaurdless of who's contract your paying.

Thats not how it works. We wont be able to offer Bosh a Max contract unless we literally dump almost all of our roster between now and next June.

I thought with that money gone we could offer Bosh the max and then go over the cap with Lebron...

Nah. We can't let 'Bron, Shaq, and Z expire, then sign Bosh with that void, then go over with LeBron's contract, if that's what you're implying. Sounds great, but I saw something in a Windhorst column where he said there is some kind of contract 'hold' rule, and that scenario isn't possible. Why does everything have to be so complicated? :sigh:

If it wasn't that complicated teams in cities like Cleveland would never be able to compete. Teams like New York and L.A. would be able to do the same thing and they will always have more money. Its hard enough getting athletes to come to Cleveland.

Sidenote: My favorite "get me the hell out of Cleveland" athlete has got to be Manny Trillo.

As far as Gerald Wallace: I didn't want a versatile roster anyway. That would confuse Mike Brown too much. The man either has no consistency to his rotation and the bench guys don't get used consistently OR he refuses to change the 6 man rotation he's been using even though his scheme isn't working!! UGGGGHHHHH!!

Does the length of this Varejao deal mean either Shaq or Z are gone after next season? Maybe both? Is Andy more valuable as a center?

I was under the assumption that both Z and Shaq were gone at the end of this season. Z to retire and Shaq to someone that'd be willing to give him more than we are.

Ideally, you sign whatever free agent in 2010 first. Second, you resign Lebron James to his max deal. Third, you resign Shaq if the value and money is reasonable. Fourth, look at your options for the MLE.

I believe with the cap hold for both Lebron and Shaq you would have to renounce shaq to attempt something like that, and then you would lose the bird rights to Shaq. And I dont think without renouncing just about everyone but Lebron we would have enough room to do a max signing anyway.

Its hard to say exactly where we are going to be at next offseason as far as salary goes until we find out exactly how Varejao and Parker's deals are structured, plus we see if we sign anyone else, BUT its looking like we are going to be pretty close to the cap anyway. Renouncing Shaq and Z might happen, but you're right even with renouncing everyone but LeBron we definately wont have anywhere close to a max contract offer available. Doesnt mean we cant land a big named guy, but it will have to be done through trade.

Im looking at you Chris Bosh or Joe Johnson.

I can't believe you all are actually taking this deal seriously? Why would the cats do it?

If the cats are looking to cut salary why did they add a truckload in all the trades last year?

This thread should have been locked when Finnan admitted to just making it up, but since it wasn't, can't we just let it die.
