Adrian Peterson, my thoughts and comparison.

Post#1 » by NO-KG-AI » Tue Sep 25, 2007 5:51 pm

Mod buddies, I couldn't find a dedicated AP thread, and I really wanted to talk about him, and voice some thoughts. Move it if you have one somewhere.

Adrian Peterson has played well from the go, no adjustment period needed, and watching him, and seeing his highlight reel has been a pleasure, love his game.

The person I see the most when I watch AD though, is a comparison most people don't use.

That man is Deuce Mcallister.

The similarities are really spot on, when you look at Deuce as a rookie. Most know Deuce as the power back, and don't remember his explosiveness before injuries, and bulking up hit his speed. This guy was our KR as a rookie, and a 3rd down receiving back, behind Ricky Williams.

This is is their numbers on the way out(might be off by minimal amounts).

Deuce:

6'1 221, 4.44 40 time.

AD:

6'2, 218, 4.38 40 time.

That's not what really does it though. Both guys coming out were never talked about as a receiver, but both have great hands, I haven't seen enough of AD catching to say he is as good as Deuce(who had 69 catches, and before Reggie, Joe Horn said he had the best hands on the team easily) but he is much better than most originally thought in high school.

The thing that gets me the most, is both guys are tall, and run upright, and at 220ish, aren't exceptionally huge, not Jamal lewis like, but damn can they bust through tackles.

The way AD looks for guys to punish is very much like watching Deuce again.

The similarities in skill, size, speed, running style, and attitude on the field is uncanny IMO, and I love watching AD.

Here is to a long and healthy career

had time to kill between classes. Thoughts?

I remember when Deuce came out of college he was supposed be a top 10 pick but he dropped because of injury concerns. The Vikings were eyeing a RB that year because Robert Smith just retired. The Saints took McCallister 2 spots ahead of the Vikings when they already had Ricky Williams. Bastards! The Vikings ended up with Michael Bennett.

Yeah, he dropped because of injuries, and because he happened to be the second best running back in the draft to LT.

The Saints just made a BPA pick with him, we weren't in dire need, but he was too good a talent to pass on.

And Back to AP. I am not so sure I am on board with McCallister at this point. Injury concerns and overall physical stats, I say yes, but running style...not sure at this point. His stop and go, his juke, his SPIN, is sick for a guy that size. As much as he is big and fast, he is also that good with his feet. A complete back if you will. Deuce, very good, but not this good with his moves. I am not sure I have seen a back this big with this kind of skill. LT is on another planet. LJ and Stephen Jackson are not the same... I think we may have to go back a few years on this one...dare I say a younger/bigger/more upside version of Robert Smith. I know not as fast, I know a more upright runner. But Rob had some sick juke, and a lot of that was because of the respect for his speed, but he could catch out of the back field and turned a lot of ankles as well.
"Dude, all I am saying is we already have a starting RB, his name is Chester Taylor. Besides AP isn't that good anyways. I hope we draft McFadden." --Me after he broke the record.

I can't remember Deuce ever doing a spin now that you mention it, but his juke is still pretty good, even after injuries and bulk.

You would have to go back to Deuce's first few seasons to really remember, and see what I mean.

I'm not sure I like the Robert Smith comparison. They both run upright and are incredibly fast but power is such huge part of Peterson's game in a way it never was for Smith. I also think Peterson has better juke than Smith ever did. Peterson's biggest problem seems to be vision. There have been a few times this year where Peterson seemed to have huge hole but missed it and ran into the pile.
I didn't see enough of young Deuce to make a good comparsion.

Missing holes is a thing that happens to most young runners.

Peterson can feel defenders behind him, and has instincts to know when he is about to be hit, and when to make a move. The vision will come, the instincts can't be taught.....

Peterson's averaging 19 carries a game, right where he should be. Why does everyone want to run him into the ground?
