http://www.marca.com/2009/07/11/balonce ... 28241.html

Marca is reporting that Rubio would be close to agree with Unicaja. They say Unicaja is not willing to pay the entire buyout, so they need to negotiate with Joventut. They also say that they would make that effort considering Rubio's marketing potential, as Unicaja (kind of a public bank that owns most of the Malaga club) would use him as a marketing face.

As previously reported, the biggest asset Unicaja owns is the coach, Aíto García Reneses, for whom Rubio would love to play again. Still, again the main problem seems to be the contract duration. Unicaja wants three years, but Marca says Rubio is not convinced of staying for so long in Spain before going to the NBA.

I think this would be a worst-case scenario for the Wolves.

Here’s the gist from Spanish media reports the last day or two on the Ricky Rubio Saga:

Two teams in Spanish’s top ACB league — Real Madrid and Unicaja Malaga — are trying to negotiate to reach an agreement with his current DKV Joventut team on that big buyout and sign him.

Real Madrid has more clout, but Unicaja Malaga looks like the favorite if he stays in Europe because of Rubio’s close relationship with Malaga coach “Aito” Garcia Reneses, who coached him at Joventut and also was the Spanish Olympic team’s head coach last summer in Beijing and because Rubio would rather live in beautiful Malaga closer to his hometown than big Madrid.

Unicaja, a financial institution that sponsors the Malaga team, is, according to reports, is willing to pay a good chunk — but not all — of the $6.6 million buyout Rubio owes if he wants release from the final two years of his contract. The bank figures Rubio would become an iconic marketing figure for them in Spain, much like Pau Gasol or Rafael Nadal.

One sticking point: Unicaja wants a three-year commitment and Rubio reportedly isn’t sure he wants to delay his NBA debut that long. Real Madrid is willing to allow him to come to the NBA after two years.

Either team can pay Joventut as much as they want to resolve the buyout situation. The Wolves, by NBA rules, can only pay $500,000.

That's pretty accurate except for the fact that Madrid is indeed closer to Rubio's home than Málaga.

I wonder if lost in translation, closer originally meant "more similar to"

Seems possible, since after using "closer" they describe Madrid as "big" not "distant" or something like that.

nahh Worst case scenario is if Rubio decides not to play professionally at all (highly unlikely) and is able to re-enter the draft an go to another team next year.

If he plays professionally, no matter how many years, Minnesota will still own his rights.

That's not a scenario. He's under contract with Joventut. In order to be able to re-enter the draft, he can't be under contract (the Henry Abbott blog post was wrong). So he should first pay his buyout, which is impossible if he's not playing professionaly next season, because he doesn't have any significant money at all.

So we're creeping up towards the 100 page mark, yet we still haven't advanced beyond what we knew at like page 5

Awesome!

Can someone please explain to me why his buyout is so huge when his actual salary is tiny (compared to his buyout that is)

Now that I think about it, why does he even have to honor that contract? He didn't sign it. It would seem logical to me that anything his parents signed when he was underage should be void now that he's over 18.

Why not? In the NBA there are no buyouts regardless the size of contracts, as far as I know. At least Rubio has one.

Of course he has to honor it. Actually, they had to wait until he turned 16 years old in order to sign the contract. I'm not sure, but it's possible that Ricky himself signed that contract (assisted by his parents and agent).

I'm sure he does. But does it seem fair that he has to honor something he didn't sign? I mean, hypothetically his parents could've signed a lifetime contract, and he wouldn't be able to ever get out of it. Does that seem fair? I'm not suggesting this is a realistic way to get out of the contract, I'm just sayin.

His buyout isn't that big actually, that's just US media making a propaganda to Americans. It's common place in Europe for young athletes to have such buyouts in their contracts.

He signed the raise he got this season which was a contract agreeing to the original contract and buyout and gaining a big raise. Therefore, he legally validated the contract and agreed to it. In just about any western court of law that is the case.

Also, keep in mind that US media purposely chooses to omit the fact that he was given a large raise. They choose on purpose to omit that he signed that raise which was put to the original contract, therefore he signed and agreed on the original deal and buyout. Also, US media purposely chooses to omit his salary raise whenever they state what his supposed income with Joventut is.
