and how does not making moves not have anything to do with the GM and ownership?

'sigh'

Zilby, can you explain to me how a GM can make moves if the owners don't give him any money to do it?

Rogers Communications cares about making money, not winning baseball games.

Pedro Martinez will become a member of the Phillies if he passes a physical.

A baseball source confirmed Monday that Martinez will fly from the Dominican Republic to Philadelphia and take a physical Monday or Tuesday. If Martinez passes, he could sign a deal with the Phillies in the next few days.

The Phillies watched Martinez, 37, throw twice last week at their baseball academy in the Dominican. They came away impressed both times.

guess not.

it's going to be interesting to see how Pedro pans out.. he had a pretty bad season previously, so who knows how he'll perform.. i guess he really prefers the East coast teams huh?

To be fair, JP had money to spend the previous 3 seasons (if I'm not mistaken) with the bigger payroll and he essentially squandered it in MASSIVE contracts for Rios and Wells, also on aging past their prime players that he has wanted for years (Frank Thomas).

So the "fire JP" sentiment is for good reason. He has shown time and time again, that he is incapable of producing a team that can truly compete. When he was brought in initially, he was supposed to be the protege of Billy Beane and the moneyball philosophy (smart, efficient spending/ value on quality "not quite star" players). Well he failed at that, then when given the opportunity to spend more money (on good faith from Rogers Communications, mind you, to produce a winning team, money must be spent) he went wild overpaying on anyone and everyone he could and now look where we are. Tighter budget constraints, we have some good pieces, but ultimately JP can be summarized as a "mediocre" GM at best.

We could of used a proven arm not only to add to are starting 5 but maybe turn things around for us. I dont know why we couldnt spend 4 million to try and turn around a season which looks to be on the fast track down hill.

Exactly!

They are 11 games out of the division in a year that they called a "development season" before it started. They aren't going to be throwing millions to veteran pitchers in an attempt to turn it around, and it would be ridiculous if they did.
