Pedroia Will Miss ASG, Spot Goes To PENA! wtf?

Post#1 » by zilby » Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:13 pm

Major League Baseball announced today that Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will not attend the 2009 All-Star Game.

American League All-Star manager Joe Maddon has selected Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Peña as his replacement on the A.L. All-Star roster.

This marks Peña's first career All-Star selection. The ninth-year Major Leaguer is the 28th first-time All-Star selected to the 2009 Midsummer Classic.

Peña, a 2008 Rawlings Gold Glove winner, is hitting .230 with an A.L.-high 24 home runs and 58 walks, along with 58 RBI and 61 runs scored.

MLB and the Red Sox today issued the following statement from Pedroia:

“After consulting with Tito [Terry Francona], Theo [Epstein], Phyllis Merhige of Major League Baseball and my wife, Kelli, I have decided to withdraw from this year’s All-Star Game in St. Louis. I will instead stay in Boston with my wife as we tend to a serious family health matter.

“This was certainly not an easy decision. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the game of baseball and for the All-Star Game and am incredibly honored that the fans voted me this year’s starting second baseman for the American League. I am disappointed that I will not be able to enjoy the amazing experience with the other All-Stars, especially with my Red Sox teammates, but it is important that I put my family first at this time.

“I want to thank Major League Baseball as well as Tito and Theo for supporting me in this decision and I would like to thank the fans for their understanding and the continued support they have shown throughout my career.”

Said Maddon: “I fully understand Dustin’s decision as he tends to a family matter. We wish Dustin and his family the very best.”

I'd say it's because Joe Maddon's managing... same reason why Werth was added as a replacement, his manager.

Hey zilbs dude, Hill already has a spot on the roster. And Pena cannot play second base. Therefore, our boy Hilly should and likely will, get the start at second base. So don't worry too much my man.

Maddon said Toronto's Aaron Hill will start at second base in place of Pedroia

Lind should have gotten the spot over Pena. Pena's batting .230! Terrible.

ya i know that Pena is not a 2B. and hill is on the roster i know. but why would they get a 1B to replace a 2B? i figured that Kinsler would get the call.

my point exactly. Pena got the call because of his HR number. Lind has hit enough HR's and has played tremendous with over .300 avg. and great fielding. terrible call

Ah I see. It's just your OP says Hill should have gotten that spot. That's why I was confused. I think you meant Lind.

His average is pretty low, but he still gets on base at a similar rate to Lind, and his power numbers are absurd. I think that Lind deserved it more, but Pena isn't a scrub.

When Cito Gaston gets to manage the All-Star game I'm sure he'll pick his own guy over somebody else when it comes down to it.

It's the same reason why we make connections in the work place. Same principle.

Isn't Pena still leading the AL in homers? No one should be surprised by this.

yes but he is batting .228.

Lind: 19 HR, 59 RBI, 26 2B, .306 avg.

Pena: 26 HR, 58 RBI, 19 2B, .228 avg.

lind outmatches Pena in 3/4 categories and has hit well and easily crushes his doubles and average.

he deserves to go more.
