Carlos trade revisited
Many people hated the Lee trade when it happened last year. I was a huge defender of Cordero, arguing that he'd been a top 5 closer for three years and simply had one bad month. Mench? He looked wretched last year so I wasn't happy about him.
If you look at the trade now, we made out extremely well. Cordero was dominant last year. This year, he hasn't given up a run and leads the majors in SV's. Mench is killing lefties (like he has his entire career) and the Menchkins platoon has been ridiculously productive. Up to now, the two have combined in LF to produce these numbers (only Mench's LF numbers are used):
.387 BA
.417 OBP
.634 SLG
.1051 OPS (Elite, only 4 guys did better than that last year)
5 HR
8 2B
17 RBI
Those two in LF could easily outproduce Carlos for the season.
Nelson Cruz has looked terrible in the majors and may be nothing more than a AAAA player. Carlos said that this was the first time he was a FA and that he really wanted to test the market, so there was really no way he was coming back.

I think it's very clear now that in terms of the trade itself, the Brewers won. All the Rangers have is Cruz, and he's been terrible. Meanwhile, Mench is producing very well and Cordero's been fantastic.

Man last year I was wondering if Melvin still knew what he was doing. I hated this trade but ill be honest now and say Melvin pulled out another one. Cordero is a Top 5 closer in the MLB and has been dominant so far this year 10 for 10. Mench has shown it just taken some time to adjust. Hes hitting the ball a lot better this year. We had no chance at bringing back Lee either. Two thumbs up on this one

I said to him, trust me our GM is a god.
So far, it looks like we got the better end of the deal which no body thought was possible when we talked about trading Carlos Lee.
You should laugh at your friend for being a Royals fan.

The trade itself wasn't a bad deal....and is really looking good right now.
The bigger issue was the fact that we had yet another slugger (Greg Vaughn, Burnitz, Sexson) that we were forced to deal because we couldn't afford his contract demands under baseball's economic system. It was just another kick to the head for Brewers fans, that we couldn't write the checks to compete as easily as the big markets.....and it hurt bad.
Melvin is a great GM though with his limited resources.....

Each of those three guys has come to talk at my school at some point. Interesting...

Re: Carlos trade revisited
Wouldn't mind Nelson Cruz in RF now.
Mench was a horrible flop.
Nix never developed.
Cordero was solid but then bolted w/o compensation and was not part of any playoff team here either. So eh...
Carlos had some good years after this deal and should've netted more at the time AND the fact Doug gave up a future all-star and current stud Nelson Cruz makes this look not so hot.
Rangers win.

Yeah. Melvin has a bad record when it comes to trades. That's why I'm afraid of him trading Fielder.

Let's not ride a dead horse here, yeah, we didn't get much for value, and yeah, Melvin does in fact suck at trades. However, thank god we didn't re-sign that cow, he is becoming a growing liability by the minute and has an albatross of a contract to boot.

I don't think re-signing Carlos was ever the question, but maximizing his return value is/was. Lee was a huge asset at the time and Melvin really didn't turn it into anything long-term. Richie Sexson was a huge asset at one time and really only have Dave Bush (via Lyle Overbay) and Chris Capuano to show for it. The other guys: Chad Moeller, Jorge de la Rosa, Junior Spivey, and Craig Counsell (who left and cameback) didn't do much in Brewers uniform and didn't net anything in return. Dan Kolb had some value as a closer a few years back and it turned into Jose Capellan who flopped.
