Retired player's salary

Post#1 » by DIO » Tue Jul 14, 2009 3:21 pm

I can't understand why Ben Wallace accept buyout which discounted 4mil.

Retired player's salary isn't guaranteed?

Ben Wallace would rather have 4 million dollars less in the bank and be able to start enjoying his retirement right now. He couldn't just decide to not play and still get paid- that would be no different than a holdout. The suns just found the price point where Wallace was content to stay home and enjoy himself rather than going through the motions so he could still get paid.

Ben couldn't just retire for the hell of it and still get paid. Uniform contracts are guaranteed against injuries and lack of skill, but not disinterest. So if he retired, he wouldn't get paid. The Suns knew he wanted to quit, which is why they traded for him, yet he knew he wouldn't get paid if he did. So a stalemate ensued. And $10 million was the middle ground.

Just a side note: I'm willing to not play for the bargain price of $1 million. But don't try to play hardball with me, otherwise I'll stage a hold-in.
