Suns want Amare healthy before extension.

Post#1 » by Suns2k5 » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:55 am

"I think everything looks great, but before you make that kind of a financial commitment, or any commitment in this league, you have to know that your player is fine and ready to go,” Suns general manager Steve Kerr said on Tuesday. “I’m on the same page as Charlie (Grantham, Stoudemire’s agent) and Amare. We need to see Amare on the court in October and see that everything’s going to be OK, which we fully expect. Before we make that kind of commitment, you’d better be sure.”

“We need to see him play,” Kerr said. “Charlie knows that. Amare knows that. Obviously, the eye situation was more serious than what we first thought. The recovery time has taken longer.”

Can contract extensions be negotiated during the season?

The story states that he can be signed to an extension at any point next season.

Well looks like all the Amare lovers are going to get what they want, and the Suns will build around him (provided he's healthy).

I don't see the problem with building around Amare if he's healthy. The main concern was his future health, if it's an issue then I wouldn't want to build around him.

^Exactly. And best way to build around him is to surround him with defensive talent going forward.

smart and fair move. Amar'e knows he can only up his value with a strong come back from this surgery and in addition he knows PHX can offer him more and a longer extension. Amar'e wants the money. PHX is his biggest cash-in. I expect him to explode this season. One if not his best season in his young career. I don't know why, but I just see him coming back with a vengeance and something to prove...well to prove he's worth the $$$$

But nah that's sounds like a good plan, glad we're doing something that makes sense :)

I like how this offseason has gone. Kerr has stuck to his words. We knew Shaq was going to get traded because SSOS wasn't really working, and we didn't improve defensively like we hoped. Also, we knew who we were going to get in the draft, and that we're going to try and retain Hill + get Frye + extend Nash, and all is going according to plan. If we can get the extentions done, we're in great shape for next season with a base of Nash/Amar'e/Hill/Barbosa/Frye/Clark and maybe Richardson.

Obviously this is common sense and good to see our FO has some as I think we were all starting to worry.

My question is this - Is anyone else ashamed to have Ker making these announcements? Like, how is he representative of the Suns? I mean I know he's the GM but I just feel uncomfortable with him speaking on behalf of my beloved Suns. When JC or BC spoke it was like a preacher from the pulpit, when Kerr speaks its like a pre-pubescent choir boy talking.

Any contract extension that pays more than 17M per year, Suns should walk out.

Im serious... He may be fit and healthy for a few months, or the season, but I think he is going to be "injury" prone once he is locked in a 5 year deal. Its almost certain.

He isnt a Number 1 go to guy, he is an elite finisher who is best at playing main scorer but nothing else.

I still think Suns should cash in on him, get his value UP.
Then sign and trade for a young potential star, lottery bound draft picks and other pieces.

Suns have shown they can win without him, he isnt MVP caliber.... I do like the 30 points a night he brings in... but he gives up 30 on the other end anyways.

I'm OK with giving Amare a max extension if he has shown he can put up numbers, is healthy and gives at least a passable effort on defense.

If we surround Amare with the right guys, we can be a very good team.

No one wanted him at the deadline for much when he was healthy, I don't think trying to get his value up will work. We're never gonna even get fair value for him, and nothing's seemingly gonna change with that. Amare needs the Suns, we need Amare. Like I said, if we can get some defensive talent around him, you can build with him. He's a #2, so what? We look for a #1 to pair with him in the future.

I actually think you can't...but I might be mistaken. Can't remeber any case of player being extended beyond October, that is, during the Regular Season.

From the AP article:

"The Suns have fielded trade offers for Stoudemire this summer. But if they decide to keep him, they could sign him to an extension at any point next season."
