Matt Barnes rumored for the Hawks?

Post#1 » by td00 » Thu Jul 16, 2009 4:21 pm

Jared Dudley stating that Matt Barnes could possibly be here or Cleveland next year.

Does he fit here on this roster? Can he find minutes should we resign Marvin?

He is better than Mo...but it depends on how much he is asking for. It's a good value signing for the minimum. If he wants more than that then I'd rather that money go into a big like Wilcox or Diogu.

Rumor was mentioned by Jared Dudley on Twitter...found it on hoopshype.com....

Found another Barnes article:

Barnes, a 29-year-old swingman, is long and lanky at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds. His next team would be his seventh NBA stop. He is coming off a career year in which he averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists for Phoenix, where he started 40 games. Barnes said Dallas, Orlando and Cleveland have expressed interest.

yeah he is better than mo. but barnes doesnt really fill a need on the team. small forward is pretty well covered unless they intend on getting rid of Marvin

Our bench is still thin. Adding a guy like Matt would be a big boost. Tough to see him choose us over those rumor teams though unless we overpay for him.

C-Horford/Pachulia/Morris
PF-Smoove/
SF-Williams/Barnes
SG-Johnson/Mo
PG-Bibby/Crawford/Teague

I'd say there is plenty of room for him on the roster. Perhaps if Teague start showing signs of breaking through and handling the backup PG role then you can look to move Mo. Early on there is room for Barnes.

I'm a fan. A great energy guy that can stroke the trey and hassle the opposition on defense. But I agree with most everyone else, it's not worth an unreasonable price tag as it would come at the expense of improving the front court depth.

Barnes is a better version of Mo to me - the additional size makes him a better replacement when marvin is out of the game. He also is a blue collar hustle guy that I think will work well with JJ.

Frees the hawks up to move mo for a a pick or for a backup 4, or in combination with Josh Smith for a true 5. Gives you great flexibility.

Where did u hear about this? That would be a huge boost for us..
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I would have tried to include Mo in one of the trades we made. He is a pretty mediocre rebounder and defender and he can't finish inside at all.

Barnes is actually a pretty good rebounder and passer for a tweener 3/4. I'm trying to think why Boston didn't sign this guy last year when he was available for the minimum....he seems like the most similar player to James Posey in the league.

Well for whatever reason, Phoenix doesn't want him.....don't understand...I think he is a very good guy who fills the gaps on a bench....very versatile.

I don't see he and Evans on this team, but I could be mistaken.

Maybe Sekou has an inside on a big man?

I would love that move. He's a far better fit at backup SF than Childress at a fraction of the price. I'd welcome him all the way up to the BAE 1.9M per year 2 year max. I'm still hoping for a PF backup with part of the MLE.

He would give us a decent defender and a guy who is a good scorer when hot. He would also let us be able to spread our minutes out. He can play some 4 which would help since he don't have a backup pf. Also it would help the team if JJ didn't have to move to the 3 and play a ton of minutes and we could have a lineup of bibby/crawford/barnes some.

i'm not really a big Mo Evens fan, but i really don't know why Barnes is that much better than Mo. both can get about 10ppg, when given around 20mpg. both guys are good spot up shooters and just average at creating for themselves, but Mo is a really good 3pt shooter, while Barnes is just average. Mo can usually get about 0.390 3FG%, while Barnes only gets about 0.350 3FG%

Barnes is a far better rebounder, a better defender, and is probably a worse spot-up shooter, but is more deadly when he gets hot. He had a 26/10/7 game against the Lakers, and will pretty much always contribute in some way. On the other hand, Mo is very content to just lay back.

Barnes is a lot better than Mo. While I would rather spend the money on a big guy, he would make the team better.

I think Barnes would be a great addition. Yes, it would better to get another big, but he would give us a lot of extra firepower off the bench. We would be 9 players deep instead of last year's 7, and that's not including Teague or any other big we can sign. I we could get him for around what we're paying Mo, I think they should definitely pull the trigger.

I don't think Barnes is as steady, as good of a defender or as explosive as Mo, but I think he would be a good addition. He's one of those hustle guy's you hate unless he is on your team.

Mo's man to man defense is mediocre at best. He was very similiar to Childress in that regard. I also think his athleticism is overrated because he is a weak rebounder and he was the worst on the team by far when it came to close shots.
