CP3 to Mavs? Why not OKC?

Post#1 » by wiff » Fri Apr 10, 2009 2:27 am

Via the Wiretap

An article from the Dallas Morning News suggests the Mavericks let the Hornets know that they would be willing to take back two of their worse contracts in a package for Chris Paul. Tim MacMahon, the reporter who wrote the piece, also suggests the Mavericks will approach the Hornets this summer with a similar offer.

Mark Cuban has repeatedly said the Mavs will be "opportunistic" in the trade market and are willing to take on salary if the right situation presents itself.

"I want to win," Cuban said Wednesday night when asked about his willingness to take on significant salaries under the right circumstances. "If I think it puts us over the top, hell yeah. I'll just go get another job at Dairy Queen."

So if Cuban and the Mavs can offer up a package for Chris Paul and whatever bad contracts the Hornets want to send out why not OKC?

What if the Hornets sent out Paul and Peja? 27.9mil total (I know Peja is way over priced but to land Paul????)

And the Thunder sent out Westbrook, Watson, Wilkins, and Atkins. 17.1mil total

That would mean the Thunder would need to be around 11 mil under the cap to simply absorb the rest.

Would you do it? It's possible a similar package could be used with Jeff Green and not Westbrook. But I'd assume sending out a pg the Hornets would want a pg coming back.

Sign me up
to have that lineup would be awesome

CP3/Watson
Thabo/Weaver
Durant/Peja
Green/White/Collison
Kristic/Thabeet?

If anyone can make Thabeet look like a stud it would be CP3

I think that the Hornets would get rid of their entire squad before Paul, including West. They could get rid of Chandler (especially on a one year shorter contract) this offseason pretty easily, and they've already burnt the bridge with him by trading him once...

I just see no reason that they would trade Paul, even when some great players are included coming back. I suppose, maybe if something was offered like Westbrook, this year's two picks, and expirings they would take it.

As awesome as it would be to pair Paul with Durant, I don't see it happening either. If it were possible, I would be willing to give near anything not named Durant for him though.

Well considering there is a new wiretap about Paul and the possibility of being traded how does this trade sound?

NOH trades/OKC receives: Cp3, Peja, Mo Pete
OKC trades/NOH receives: Westbrook, Green, Thabo, PHX 2010 1st, Watson(ec),Atkins(ec)

It's a trade idea from qclakers.

Is there anyone in this forum that would say no to this deal from an OKC stand point?

For New Orleans it gives them financial freedom two great prospects, one solid role player and a potential lottery pick.

OKC gets Paul nuff said.

it'd make it tough for okc next season.. with paul, peja, and peterson on the books they'd be pushing $64 million in payroll for 11 players assuming krstic picks up his option.

obviously from a fan's perspective you do it, but is okc as a franchise going to essentially pay $28 million (cap space this year + peja / peterson next season) for the rights to chris paul's contract?

Slick, what would make you say yes? AD instead of Mo Pete?
or CP, Tyson and AD for Westbrook, Green, Thabo, PHX 2010 1st, Watson, Atkins?

oh i'd do these trades in a heartbeat i'm just saying that the organization might give pause if they're looking at $65 million commited next year without even a full roster.

What does the lineup look like after this trade occurs?

Paul / Livingston / Weaver
Harden / Peterson / Wilkins
Durant / Peja
Collison / White / Ibaka
Krstic / Mullens

Who am I forgetting?

And how much longer will Peja's bloated contract last?

Still not happening, IMO. If the Hornets really had to shed contracts, they could get rid of Chandler's and probably give up a 1st rounder or 2 in order for someone to take Peja's. That's a much better outcome than the enormous setback that losing Paul would be.

There is practically no better fit than CP3 for Kevin Durant. But I just don't see it happening. Maybe OKC is hoping CP3 will not stay with NO when his contract is up because it looks like NO has no desire to spend the money needed to stay competitive to really win in the playoffs.

The reception CP3 got when he played in OKC was terrific. They may be holding out on signing anyone to major money now, in the hopes that he will return here eventually.

Would have to jump on any chance to have Paul and Durant together. Paul is already arguably the top point in the league while Durant is a top 3 SF already. Would be unbelievably easy to build around the duo since they can both fill it up.

Me.

Paul is grea, but I like Westbrook and Green. Its a push for me in a 2 for 1 deal. (I think Paul is a stat padder to a degree) but add in Thabo and PHX pick??? NO WAY

SToJAK and MO=PETE are garbage and both are on the downward side of thier careers
