MIAMI - The Florida Marlins lengthy quest for a new ballpark came off the drawing board Saturday with a ceremonial groundbreaking, but the team's vision goes beyond creating a field of its own and controlling its own revenue.

It's about making a statement. So Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria challenged veteran ballpark architecture firm Populous to design a modernist structure: a sleek white stucco, silver metal and glass venue. He wanted a pitcher's park, but with an intimate 37,000 blue seats, a left-field beach with a swimming pool and a right-field porch where fans can catch home-run balls. And sliding glass panels behind left field to showcase Miami's skyline.

"For me, Miami is a really cool place to live ... it's a cool place to visit, it's a cool place to work in, and I wanted the stadium to have that feeling, which is why I wanted to look forward, rather than looking backward," Loria said.

Kind of looks like Tropicana Field on the inside. And what a novel idea, a stadium with a retractable roof where it's a common occurence to have rain and hot and humid weather. Enjoy your open roof stadium, Minnesota.

I like it. It's a much more welcoming stadium than the current stadium. They're also going to be called the Miami Marlins.

Seems like a decent park, although all the new ones seem that way now. Nothing really sticks out as being special to me tho.

Minnesota wanted a retractable roof, but they couldn't get it passed because it would cost to much and the tax payers would go rar rar rar

Jacobs is gone. Uggla may be moved in the next week. And, Johnson will probably be traded around 2011 before we lose his arbitration years.

Wait, they're actually becoming the Miami Marlins?

Stadium looks great, though
