Why do a S&T with Daniels?
I dont understand why LB wants to S&T Daniels. The cap room would be more benificial, especially when the alternatives are Tony Allen and freakin Scalabrine. Unless their is another trade coming it just doesnt make sense.

Bird is probably still going to need two players to fill out the roster (at least one being a wing) and not a lot of cash to do it. Boston has quite a few young cheaper wing options like Allen(being the priciest), Walker, Pruitt, Giddens, etc. What it's going to come down to for Bird is whether the guys Boston is going to throw at us are a better value than some of the guys left on the open market. Scalabrine really doesn't make any sense though.

Larry is exploring his options, the fact that we have the rights to Daniels is an asset, no matter how small its the job of a GM to see if he can get something in return for that asset.
Its a different situation but look what Toronto was able to do with Marion, they had no interest in signing him but were able to do a sign and trade to dump Kris Humphries and pick up two serviceable players along with qualifying for the MLE.
Letting Daniels go for nothing gets us exactly that, if we can get anything of value we have to look at it.

If Bird lands Pruitt and Walker, then it's an awesome trade for the Pacers. Chances are, we still end up with nothing, but there is a small chance, one, or even both, of these players, can blossom under our system. Both have decent potential. It's a low money risk. Well worth taking IMO.

Contracts aren't big enough.
If we can fill out the roster with young guys who can improve and are cheap then I think we should DEFINITELY do a S&T. We can fill it out real cheap, and maybe 1 of the guys turns out to be a good player. It may cost us a few million dollars, but it would also help us win a game or 2. If we do a trade it will be beneficial for us. I will take the chance on these guys. Either do a S&T or sign some player that probably wouldn't be as good as the guy(s) we get in return. Also, I hear they may inlcude money, so we could actually make money for these players. I hear the C's are close to the luxury tax or over it, so this helps them out too.
My point of view s why not do a S&T. As long as Bird isn't really dumb and just does it for Scala and that's it, then it isn't very smart. Thinking about it, though, I think the max a team can give you is $3 million, no matter what is being traded. So we could get him and then just buy him out and make a million bucks or whatever. We could probably get their 1st rounder next year, too. I don't know if they are way over the luxury tax, but getting more players would save them money and give us some possible decent players!

u don't get first round picks by trading unrestricted free agents that would sign for lle.
that's just crazy talk.
as for why u do it? u help the player, so agents remember what u did. U get back a 3 m a year guy, and usually get cash to cover most of it (up to a max of 3m) and u gain an ending contract that can be used in the year all teams will be dumbing even good players salaries to get as far under as they can.

I think the deal that makes the most sense is probably Tony Allen + cash for Daniels. It works out for all three parties (Boston, Indiana, and Daniels).
Boston gets their guy, probably at less cost to them than if they signed Daniels for the $1.9 million max they can pay him as a free agent, since they move Allen and avoid luxury tax they would have to pay if they had both Daniels and Allen on their payroll.
The Pacers get depth at the wings, which they need, basically for free--they pay Allen's one year, $2.5 million with the cash sent by Boston. Plus, who knows, maybe Allen's expiring deal can be used as trade bait sometime in the next year.
And Daniels gets a bigger salary through a sign-n-trade than he could get from Boston as a free agent.
