Ricciardi: Halladay trade is "probably unlikely"

Before tonight's game against the Cleveland Indians, Ricciardi told reporters that if the team doesn't trade Halladay between his start this Friday and his following start – scheduled for July 29 – then a trade probably wouldn't happen.

Major League Baseball's trade deadline is July 31.

"If we are trading (Halladay) then we're open to doing other things, but I think at this point it's probably unlikely that we'll trade Doc," he said.

I think this is most likely a scare tactic.

Hes trying to squeeze out everything he can from the team thats getting Doc and making it seem like they are very comfortable in keeping him. I'd be SUPRISED if Halladay is still with the Jays after the trade deadline.

If this is the case, kudos to them. Between JP and Beeston they are making a very convincing case that they are in no hurry to deal him.

However, you seem to be ignoiring that there is a downside to the tactic. Sure, it will make people think they need a really good offer. But it could also discourage someone from entering serious negotiations. And the point of negotiations would be for JP to try and talk himself into a great deal for Halladay, even if the GM didn't want to give up as much to start.
