If we don't win, I should be fired

Post#1 » by TAI8 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 12:26 am

Per wiretap:

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich likes the moves the team has made so far this offseason.

"If we don't win it, I should probably be fired," Popovich told NBA.com.

However, he added that the Spurs will only go as far a healthy Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili next season.

What do you think about this statement?

Pending injury, I completely agree. If he can't win with this team, no one can.

It is his way of saying that once the Duncan era is over, he is over. I have a feeling that Avery Johnson will be Spurs' coach eventually (maybe after Popovich or afterwards).

That would be awesome if AJ coaches the spurs eventually. But I am in no rush to let Pop go though. I still remember how much everyone was calling for his head when he first took over. Now him and RC have us all trained to just believe in what they are doing. Still can't believe we have 4 NBA titles. The spurs I grew up watching were always bounced in the first round.

Yeah same, he was our little general when he played, but I wasn't a big fan of his coaching.
It'll will likely be just one of our assistants stepping up to the plate.

This is a big call from Pop but not unexpected, for years the front office has basically stood pat and tried to win with the team that won before. Now they have gone out of their way to get a team that is capable of winning and they need that sort of attitude to go along with it.
Kudos to the San Antonio organisation.

What do you think about PJ coming back and coaching? I always liked his no nonse coaching style. The whole do what I tell you or I am going to choke you out philosophy.

Did you guys see the interview where he said this? It was during a Summer League game...he was being completely sarcastic. Media = epic fail.

The national media has never understood Pop's humor.

I don't think Avery Johnson is a better coach for a rebuilding team that needs a firm hand and discipline. Avery is kinda like a dictator IMO. When Duncan retires, I think that's what this team will become. We'd be young, and we'd be rebuilding.

This topic is pointless without a poll: "Would you fire Pop if Spurs don't win it this year?" or something like that.

LOL? Obviously, no Spurs fan would vote for Popovich to be fired.

Pop isn't going anywhere until TD hangs them up...

I think people are taking this comment far too seriously. It's merely Pop complimenting the front office in his own backhanded way.

^^^ Spot on. Pop's got a sense of humor that's dryer than the desert.

I'm surprised the thread on the GB has got to 7 pages and counting.

Disagree Lakers fan are great. Most of them know the game very well only problem they are even more biast than we are.

I just saw a dude a HEB with a Spur tatooted on his neck. Can't be more dedicated than that.

Face it, Spurs are just too old to compete with the Lakers in a seven game series. Of course, that doesn't mean the Spurs can't avoid playing them by having the Nuggets or Jazz do the dirty work and thus giving the Spurs a great shot at reaching ther 2010 NBA finals.
