Kings Looking At Oberto

Post#1 » by ezekielbear » Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:09 pm

Just a lil FYI. We're one of a few teams that he's looking at, which include the Suns, Wizards, and the Spurs. I put up a little piece on it on the blog.

A little odd...considering he's 34 and we don't really want to spend much money, but, whatever. lol

Well he's 6'10 with championship experience and good defense. Bring him in with the minimum and I would be down.

I bet he goes to a team who's more competitive than we are though.

Same here. Can't imagine we'd pay too much for him either, considering all. We don't have a lot of time or money...so not really sure why we're on his radar.

Well, he is a role player that understands his limitations and does his thing solidly. But doe he has anything in the tank? I like bringing veterans but is he a respectable level veteran though? I'm not too sure.

And the Spurs just signed Ratliff. One on that list down.

It's bizarre that he would look at the Suns or the Wizards too, as most would expect neither to challenge for anything next year.

I'd be fine with it...more than likely it'll be a 2 yr deal with the 2nd year being a PO. I say we bring back booth if thats all we want is a veteran ya know?

I'm down with the signing....He's a legit C that could back up Hawes 10-15 minutes a night and gives us insurance for injury.

Oh and Perezident, it's time to take down your out-of-context quote....there's QUITE a bit you left out after the multiple periods.

The difference between Oberto and Booth is that Oberto can actually play the game of basketball
while Booth just twitters on the bench. Personally, I love Obertos game so much because hes got a high basketball I.Q.,ability to bang in the post while being able to hit the 15 footer, and he has playoff experience! Hes consistant and knows what he has to do on the floor. I think it might be safe to say I have a man crush on Oberto.

The epitome of solid. He and brockman off the bench would just bring their lunchpails and crack some skulls. I would love to see him here, even if we have to pay a bit over the minimum.

Yuck, one of the nightmares I had brought up before! I can totally see Petrie dropping a MLE sized deal on this guy, and when he does, I'll be back to tell everyone here I was right, Petrie is acting like a tard!!!! Hahahaha

Petrie isn't on borderline dumb level to do that though. So, take it easy fella! haha

We sign Oberto and Brockman never even hits the floor. 5th big man territory is where you sit in a suit and tie at the end of the bench.

I don't like this at all. Signing a 34 year old, OK-ish big man that still doesn't really satisfy too many needs is just utterly ridiculous. It's like taking quantity over quality and doing it at the dollar store no less. Rather see May or Brockman get the minutes. Unless Petrie is planning on clearing out some frontcourt pieces in a bigger trade this is a pointless move that not only takes time away from young players (and don't give me the BS about "earning their spot" either) but it hurts the little cap space we have left to facilitate a potential trade. If it's a two year deal, well, that's just plain (Please Use More Appropriate Word) then. With that said, this is a total "Petrie" move.

The Wiz already offered him a multiyear deal starting at 2 million, no, it's going to take more than that to get him.

The only thing I can think is that maybe this is a move to satisfy Noc?

For some reason, I knew you will bring that up. haha

I think we both had to agree that it was a dumb move to bring him in.

But at the time we needed length, athleticism, hustle and a player that ran the floor well. And Moore was one of the better FA due to his stint with NJ. I think it is hindsight on your part. Well, at the very least, we put a buyout clause on Moore though. So at the end, we didn't faced too much loss of cap flexibility.

Like I said earlier in the thread. Is Oberto at a respectable veteran level? I would be totally fine to bring in a Kurt Thomas, Joel Pryzbilla-type of veteran status due to our kids development.

Well...yeah! It's like a big fat pink elephant standing over in the corner. Moore was never worth the MLE, and in the end we didn't even get anything out his expiring contract! They gave him 2 million to go away, which did count on our cap this year BTW. No other way but to chalk that one up as a failure and a strike against.

Now we're going to bring in another end of his career 3 ppg 3 rpg backup big? Wow. Sorry, it's a waste of roster space. Oberto is not a "Joel Przybilla" type either. Joel Przybilla would actually qualify as a player satisfying a need at least, Oberto? Well, he's old and respectable I guess. I'd classify this as more of a Mikki Moore signing than anything else. Hopefully the Wiz or Suns save Petrie from himself.

That's my point though.

Oberto isn't really respectable in terms of player contribution on court. That is what I meant about the respectable part. Like I said "he is a role player that understands his limitations and does his thing solidly." At the very least, he is an upgrade between Booth and Simmons. (Even though, Simmons can be better due to age factor though). Image

Just to be honest, I would be disappointed if Petrie brings in Oberto other than a vet min and impedes either Hawes/Thompson's minutes.

Other than that, I don't really see this move other than "meh".
