OT: President Obama and the cops

Post#1 » by MaryvalesFinest » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:54 am

I thought this would make an interesting discussion. So if you don't know the story it basically has two sides to it, one side is saying the officers abused their powers and racial profiled him when he didn't do anything wrong and the other side is saying since he got upset he was causing disorderly conduct. After that happened President Obama comes out and says the police handled the situation badly and than the police come back and say they were doing this job and it's turning into something big now. I'll post some of the articles below that have to do with this story

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32010985/ns ... ethnicity/

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32093508/

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32091484/ns ... ethnicity/

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32113088/ns ... ite_house/

So what does everyone think about this?

As for me, I agree with Obama that the situation was handled badly and the Professor never should have been arrested in the first place.

If you read the police report, it's clear that the officers followed protocol. End of story. Obama screwed up and should have kept his mouth shut - especially when he knew nothing about the situation and hadn't read the police report. He's backtracking today... so that tells you he knows he was wrong.

Obama is obsessed with race politics and he needs to let it go. Judge a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin. That goes both ways. You can't just assume the police were racist because they were white.

I think the president acted stupidly.

lol @ this situation, this isn't racial bias by the president, it's friendship bias. Obama is friends with the guy so obviously in his mind anything anyone else says is void.

I'll just throw my opinion out there.... I think what Obama said here was wrong. Why would he criticize the police here and add fuel to the fire? I thought he was smarting than this.

@WTFsunsFTW

Did you actually listen to his whole response? After saying that the police acted stupidly he went on a diatribe about racial profiling. Listen to his response. He was CLEARLY talking about racial profiling here and inferring that the police had racial motives even though he didn't say those exact words. Everyone who listens to that knows what he in getting at.

- Look at his voting record as a senator and the legislation he tried to get passed in Illinois. This alone will prove my point.

- Attended Jeremiah Wrights church and supported the church with donations for 10 years. Jeremiah Wright is a known racist and has openly criticized white people in America.

- Appointed judge Sotomayor because she was and is "sympathetic to minorities". Those are his own words. Again, a judge should be impartial to color, size, race etc. There's a reason lady justice is blindfolded. ;)

If you are going to judge people on the basis of the content of their character, you can't look at the color of their skin. That knife cuts both ways. Whether you're white or black or purple, I don't care. I just care if you are a good person and whether you obey the law etc.

The police followed protocol and the Pres let his emotions get the best of him. I suspect he'll be issuing an apology to the officer soon.

By the way, I think racism and racial profiling is disgusting. That's why I think it's annoying that Obama turned this into a race issue when it's not.

This is ridiculous...Obama is nuts on this one. He should have investigated this before blabbing about it. His buddy is trying to save himself some embarrassment in the fact he made a bafoon of himslef when the cops legitimately arrived at the door at the request of somebody else, and if the professor had behaved himself he would not have been arrested, but he was beligerant, and has a chip on his shoulder and uses the race card before the rest of the deck is dealt. Cops tell him to be quiet, citizen says no, cops arrest him. He was not arrested for breaking and entering. he was arrested for disrderly conduct. The arresting officer was the most qualified officer on the force to make the arrest, he teaches a class in racial sensitivity and against racial profiling, and his black captain backed him up 100%

Obama should have stayed quiet, being President means not backing up your friends that are wrong. He represents the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America and he excersized poor judgement in indicting this officer before knowing the facts about how his buddy was treating the officers before he was arrested.

It's a shame on Obama. Not a huge one, but definitely a shame. Keep your focus on the economy Pres Obama. Racism will only live on stronger after reactions like the one you had, showing racial bias against the white officer who arrested your friend. Racism on all sides...white, black, latino, chinese....
The day we all start calling each other American above all else is the day healing begins. Color does not exist. The only color I am is Red, White and Blue and I will stand always with my brothers of all ethnicities to fight for those 3 colors.

Definitely a little soapboxy, but I mean it.

Because I'm sick of it all, and the words I'd use would lead me to get banned.

The good news for the cop (because we all know this guy isn't going to get a fair shake. the media LOVES a race story) is that because Obama has gone off teleprompter and put his foot in his mouth again, the media will make this story go away VERY VERY quickly.

Oh wow.

Moral of the story: Don't screw around with cops.

The guy went off right out of the gates, and the situation deteriorated quickly. I'm sure he was emotional, be I'm also pretty sure that only escalated things.

Here's the thing, Cops take a lot of flak. I got to know some Dallas officers back in college and got to talking to them... the stuff these guys see/go through is insane. I'm not talking about the guys that meet their speeding ticket quota by sitting around a corner and gunning you, I'm talking about the guys that respond to a report of the sexual abuse of a little girl or the double homicide of a newlywed couple.... stuff that makes you question why things happen... tough stuff.

When these guys respond to a house and a guy starts playing the race card off the cuff and refuses to cooperate... think about it.

Also, it's my opinion that people who are already as politically/racially/emotionally charged as this professor look for reason to make examples out of situations, sometimes when none exist.

This is not the first time race and politics have come together with the empty suit. Obama said he did not know the whole story and should have said, I will let the evidence come forward before I comment on my friend and the men and women who protect and serve us daily.

Obama acted stupidly in his response and no one is paying attention to his destructive health care plan that has no bones. No story with his health care, but about his comments.

I am just frustrated and have lost all hope in his decision making after just 6 MONTHS. I was really hopeful and was looking for real change, not more politics, or bigger/extreme government. I have lost faith in our leaders a long time ago and the Obama regime is no different from years past and might be worse.

Interesting basketball connection to this story... don't know if you guys had already seen this:

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/education/20151798/detail.html

The cop who arrested Gates is the same guy who tried to resuscitate Boston Celtic star Reggie Lewis with mouth to mouth back in 1993. Seems like a pretty stand-up guy.

It does look like the cops were just trying to do their job in this situation, but you can see why there is such a fuss in the media when you look an instance like what happened to Ryan Moats and his wife. That ordeal will burn you up no matter what race you are.
