When was the last time Washburn posted an awesome ERA? Oh yes, that was 2005, when his ERA was fourth-best in the AL. He parlayed that into a four-year, $36 million contract from Bill Bavasi, despite warnings from those who knew better that he was a flyball pitcher who benefited from great outfield defense.
So, what's that expression? Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, I'mma kick yo ass. Or something like that.
That's not to say Washburn is completely unsignable. I'd be happy to bring him back for the right deal. I'm just saying, he's done this once before and the market wound up greatly overvaluing him. I don't want to be the highest bidder yet again.
