Wade trade kicker interesting!

Post#1 » by Macedonianbull » Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:09 pm

Alright, it's all hypothetical.

Wade has a maximum deal which pays him $15,779,912 this year. He has another year as an option at $17,149,243.

He has a 15% trade kicker which, if traded right now will add another $2,366,987 to his deal.

Not so fast ...

A trade bonus cannot cause a player's salary to exceed the maximum salary, based on his years of service, during the year of the trade (Coon's FAQ)

Maximum salary for a 6 year veteran like Wade is $13,520,500.

WTF?

you're forgetting that a player's maximum salary can also be 105% of his previous salary. That's why when Shaq was traded with his $20,000,000 salary, his kicker boosted his salary to $21,000,000 for that season (and subsequent ones since he was scheduled to make $20,000,000 each of his last 3).

So if Wade was traded, the kicker was simply be reduced to get to 105% of his current salary (and that would be it, since next year is a PO).

I was waiting for the response with eagerness. :)

So, Shaq likely had a trade kicker for more than $1 million but got reduced to it since 105% of $20 million is exactly $1 million.

Thx man.

Long live the Bulls.

Wow. That Shaq contract makes for a really clean example with the numbers.

I haven't looked into this, but I would guess that what happened with Shaq wouldn't apply with Wade. Wade is already getting max raises, so I don't see the room for the increase.

Where it could have applied was if the cap kept going up. If Wade doesn't opt out and they dealt him in the case, the max for 7 year veterans could have been higher than is salary in the last year of the deal.

I agree with Modern Epic ...I don't think Wade would be eligible for any TK at all, as long as his salary is more than the standard 30% and he's already getting paid 10.5% more than he was paid last season.

If Shaq and his $20 million was able to receive an additional trade kicker money by that 105% rule, why can't Wade?

Wade has confirmed 15 percent TK and is earning $15,779,913 in the last year of his deal before the player option.

Doesn't that mean even though 15 percent of his remaining deal is $2.37 million, he would basically receive just $790k - the figure which will bring his salary to 105% of what he earns now which is his maximum salary basically?

My bad. Apparently that 105% rule takes into account the players' previous salary which for O'Neal was the same as the next one, bt not for Wade.

Then another question arises. Why is it written into the contract of Wade when it cannot possibly be applicable?

If the cap had gone way up, which was technically possible if not especially realistic, then it could have been applicable.

That's a nice superfluous incentive to give a franchise player. Ans it doesn't even hurt the franchise. In fact, if anything it helps because they need to take more salary back.
