They say Duncan is a lifetime member of Spurs, but is he?

Post#1 » by Alymero » Sun Jul 26, 2009 11:21 am

As Tim Duncan's playing career winds down, can he avoid the pitfalls of being bounced around the league? You'd almost want to dismiss this question as the stupidest thing to ask a Spurs fan considering Timothy Duncan is THE SPURS and the franchise would never function without him now or in the future. However, couldn't we say the same thing about the Rockets and Hakeem Olajuwon, the Jazz and Karl Malone, Ewing and the Knicks, and what about Jordan and the Bulls? All of these guys were the absolute be all and end all of their respective franchises and the thought of them finishing their careers anywhere else was blasphemy.

I cannot fathom any possibility of Tim wanting to leave the Spurs or the Spurs getting rid of him before he retires. Simply can't see it.

Seeing as though this upcoming season is San Antonio's last as a legitimate contender, I wouldn't exactly rule anything out in the long, hot summer of 2010.

I really think he'll retire as a Spur, but like you said guys like Olajuwon, Malone and Ewing did leave. But I think Tim's the type of guy thats going to know when its the right time to walk away, I don't see him as the type of guy too keep playing once he's way past his prime.

Spurs will need to make big changes next summer providing they don't even come close to winning it all.
At this time next year, Tim will come as close as he's ever been to wearing another team's jersey since 2000 when he verbally commited to the Magic only to be talked out of his decision by a last minute meeting with D-Rob and Pop. Anyway, I know Duncan won't be a free agent next summer or anything, but could be part of a deal in order for the Spurs to start rebuilding.

honestly just look at it realistically

dudes been settled in san antonio for years, why would he get up and leave to play elsewhere for like a year or two and move and all that he'd probably be losing money doing all that.

+ i think when tim retires he will be apart of the spurs staff some how.

 The Spurs have been declared dead more times than Freddy and Jason combined. This is definitely not our last roll of the dice.

I don't really see where else Duncan will be. He defines the Spurs, sort of like Kobe to LA and Dwight Howard to Magic.

Spurs specifically went out and spent alot of cash this offseason to put talent around Duncan for one more run. I don't think he is going to up and leave after his contract is up and no way the spurs trade him. Pop is one of the best coaches at extending players careers.

Duncan always struck me as a guy that would quit on his own terms. Not bounce around the league because he doesn't want to hang them up.

Well, I didn't think Hakeem or Malone or Ewing would leave either.

I think, as long as the Spurs remain contenders, Duncan will stay. I think if Houston, or Utah, or Knicks was still contenders, they wouldn't be traded.

Let's say Duncan plays 5 more years, I think if the Spurs blow the team up after this year and determined to go young in expense of winning, Duncan and the Spurs will feel it's best to part ways. But with the moves we made this year, I don't think the Spurs feel they're done.

With all the crap people say about Kobe its a suprise that he isn't bounced around team to team like some players are. Tim Duncan seems like a player who will stick around with his organization for his entire career. Like another poster said above me he will know when it is his time to retire for good. Duncan did a hell of a job to cement his legacy. Spurs fans should be proud that their team has a player like Duncan.

I saw Tim Duncan today at HEB and he said he's feels great and Lakers better watch out.

TD is the defacto GM of the Spurs... that should say enough...

I really did see Will Perdue at an H-E-B back in the day. True story.

I saw TD at the new HEB off NW Miltary and Wuzbach Pkwy. Apparently he goes there all the time. Cashier said his kid goes to a daycare close by there.

I always see Devon Brown in the off season at the Blanco and 1604 HEB.
